Quite the start of the season in the WSL with the first manager sacked 10 days before the season start. Leicester have sacked Amandine Miquel and her assistant for no visible reason really. They reached their best place ever 10th out of 12 with despite having between 0 and 1 striker the whole season due to injuries. I think they also equalled their best point tally. Makes no sense until you learn that they have a new Director of Football Lee Billiard. And then you hear that the Burnley manager in Tier 3 Matt Beard ex Liverpool, West Ham, Bristol, Chelsea and Boston Breakers has resigned and being put on gardening leave after being refused the right to talk... to Leicester. And guess what Billiard has hired Beard for Boston Breakers and Bristol City in the past. WSL will be extended to 14 teams at the end of the season which means in term of promotion relegation: WSL to WSL 2: no direct relegation, only a play-off for the bottom team 12th against the 3rd placed team in WSL2 to WSL : top 2 teams promoted, 3 rd placed team play-off against 12th place in WSL. WSL 2 to FA Women National League. bottom team relegated to FA WNL FA WNL national league to WSL 2 winners of FA WNL Northern and Southern promoted alongside the winner of a play off between the two runner-up teams in the divisions.

WSL matchday 2 (Sunday's game) Aston Villa 1 Chelsea 3 Leicester 1 Liverpool 0 LCL 1 Man Utd 5 Everton 0 Tottenham 2 Table 1. Man Utd 6 pts + 8 2. Arsenal 6 pts +7 ------------------------------ 3. Chelsea 6 pts + 3 --------------------------- 4. Tottenham 6 + 3 10. Liverpool 0 pt - 4 11. West Ham 0 pt -5 ---------------------------- 12. London City Lionesses 0 pt -7 At the bottom of the table, the Kang backed LCL are struggling as they have bought 17 new players during the transfer window and they are disjointed. Leicester defeated Liverpool, a huge win as Leicester are favorite for many people to go into the relegation play-off ( no direct relegation this season). At the top of the table, three of the big four have an 100% record, City having already lost to Chelsea. Man United at home to Arsenal on Sunday.
I'd say in football (and generally in all pro team sports) money unfortunatelly is everything. Lionesses current last place is the result of having 17 new players who never played with each other. Give it a couple of months and LCL will start climbing. I'd see them finish in front of Leicester City, West Ham and Liverpool... perhaps even Aston Villa.

Liverpool Football Club is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of former LFC Women manager Matt Beard. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Matt’s family and friends at this devastating time.— Liverpool FC Women (@LiverpoolFCW) September 20, 2025
Really sad news, Matt was a really nice guy well liked by the players and everyone in the industry. I am really shocked.
Matchday 3 results Everton 1 London City Lionesses 2 Tottenham 1 Manchester City 5 First ever WSL win for LCL managed by Jocelyn Precheur who is a good guy. Spurs were previously the only team not to concede a goal, they let in five against City.
The other matchday 3 results: Aston Villa - Liverpool P-P due to Matt Beard's death. Chelsea 1 Leicester 0 Brighton 4 West Ham 1 Man Utd 0 Arsenal 0 Chelsea top of the League with 9 pts, Man Utd and Arsenal 7 pts, Man City and Tottenham 6 pts. At the bottom of the table West Ham 0 pt in 3, Liverpool 0 pt in 2, Aston Villa 1 pt in 2. The League Cup (Subway Cup ) starts today with all the teams from the WSL and WSL 2 except those in the UWCL League phase who enter in the quarter-finals.
After matchday 5, Arsenal are 90% out of the title race 5 points behind Chelsea. City, Spurs and Manchester United all fighting for the three Champions League places. At the bottom Liverpool and West Ham still have no point in 5 and 4 points behind 10th place. As there is no direct relegation due to moving to 14 teams in 2026/27 having a bad season is ok, the bottom team only has to beat the 3rd place WSL 2 team in the play-offs.
After Matchday 6 United overtake Spurs in third place. Liverpool and West Ham still with no points, Liverpool with a spare game to play at Villa. London City Lionesses now in the upper side of the table after a tough start.
