If you read the whole article, soccer fans should be very happy. He is the guy who could sell soccer in Chicago. He will be just as important than the jerky editors who cut the Fire articles from 12 inches to 8, He understands that there are more than three sports in the world. He enjoyed the world cup. He can expand soccer coverage in Chicago.
There is a little area to leave messages for Downey to welcome him to Chicago and let him know what you think about Chicago sports. Suggest everyone go there.
Downey Is this the same Mike Downey who's been the main sport columnist for one of the big L.A. papers? The same one who was at the Detroit Free Press many years ago as a columnist and who left for L.A. in the 80's, his place in Detroit being taken by Mitch Albom? He'll be a big improvement, epecially if he's at all fair about soccer reporting.
It is the Mike Downey who used to be a major columnist for LA Times. He has been off the sports pages doing general "human interest" stuff for about three years, but he was a pretty good sports columnist before that. I think the Trib is lucky to get him. What does that mean for Rick Morrisey (sp?) who had the "Wake" column - has he gone elsewhere?
