Although it didn't go as cleanly as I'd hoped, I want to thank all of you who helped attempt to pull off the flag pass at Saturday's game. You could tell there were some folks in the crowd who just didn't want to let the flag go.
oh man i was watching that on tv, and noticed it right behind the players benches (i think) and then noticed it over at the end of the stadium a bit later.. I thought I was going crazy!!
ha! Actually, I thought it was a nice effect. Any chance of doing this on a regular basis and making it a regular pre-game event?
My son got a big kick out of the flag pass, too. I'd think we'd want to save it for games where there's a good attendance, like Saturday night...
I wonder if it was just so unexpected that people didn't know how to handle it? I know I was caught off guard when I saw BAQF in the corner rather than the Casbah.
I thought it was a cool idea. Please note, the Quakes are undefeated when the flag circles the stadium!
I thought it was really cool watching the flag go along the stands. I think if we do it again, though, it either needs to be started earlier or dropped at kickoff. There was a lot of protesting on the west side because the game was going on and the flag was in the way.
Yeah, I think that, along with a few people wanting to hold onto it ("oooo, big blue blankie") instead of pass it was part of it. We also wanted to try and get it back to N3 before kickoff (because we knew we'd have gotten complaints then), so having to rush it didn't help. Maybe it's something to try at halftime next time it happens.
By the time it got around to where we were in N1 it was moving pretty fast. I think that's how fast it needs to move to make it around the stadium in a reasonable time frame.
Only bandwagoners and the disinterested wait so long to buy tickets that they end up in the 2nd deck. So sorry, they don't touch the flag.
But...but... The flag is like the Holy Grail and the Shroud of Turin. Perhaps just touching the flag will cause them to roll in the isles with Quake fever!!
Loved it! Hopefully we can keep that going at our next home game. BTW: Are we bringing the flag down to LA for this wkends game?
Thank you for letting us participate, Guy. On the east side, the flag was midway up the stand, which made it kind of challenging to run along without stepping on people (my apologies to anyone I inadvertently bruised). I don't know who was holding on to the front of the flag--a very nimble fan--but he did a great job. The grabbing on to the flag was not as much of a problem in the east as it was in the S sections. The members of my family likened the flag passing to a ceremonial procession with the torah, which probably doesn't amuse most of you, but which I thought was funny. Clearly the flag has religious connotations for others too. (Maybe MLS can reincorporate as a nonprofit religious organization, thereby making our season ticket purchases tax-deductible.)
I really enjoyed the flag-passing, great idea. I did notice that a section (128?) got stuck holding it up during the rather long (but interesting) national anthem. I was sitting on the West side and when it went over our heads more than a few of us yelled "don't score yet!" but nobody seemed overly put out. I heard more people complaining about "the wave that wouldn't die". The flag thing though, that was really cool.
Rats, missed it. Usually I miss a Quakes goal when I go get a beer. This time I missed the flag pass. Do it again Oct29? PS: I am available for hire when we need a goal. Just give me beer money and I guarantee a winner.
