Here's a fact the marvel: "Six years ago, the MetroStars were finalizing plans for a new stadium and the Crew was playing at a dilapidated facility at Ohio State. This weekend, the Crew will celebrate the five-year anniversary of Crew Stadium while the MetroStars are... finalizing plans for a new stadium." I have a question- What happened to the Hispanic fans? I know there isn't a huge population of them in Columbus, but I remember seeing a good number of them at the old Ohio Stadium, and now I very seldom run into someone who isn't white at Crew Stadium.
They've all banished themselves to the upper deck corners. Usually when I go up there (I haven't been up there this year) there are usually a couple groups of 10, or so, sitting by themselves. My guess as to why they sit apart is that they feel the "white suburban" crowd is a little too blue for them.
how true. i sat in 222 at the burn game this year due to my knee injury and there were 3 or 4 hispanic families sitting up there right around me...we were basically the only ones in the section. when the rains came, everyone else left the upper deck on that side...except for myself, my sis and the hispanic folks, they're hardcore.
Were they ever involved with the supporters groups? If they could organize like the Barra Brava folks at DC United, that would be great.
I have NEVER seen anyone in Crew Stadium treated like a zoo animal, Hispanic or otherwise. [OK, maybe some DCU fans, but they've got it coming]. I see very few Hispanic fans in Crew Stadium. I see very few Hispanics in metropolitan Columbus, Ohio. I do see probably four times as many as I did five years ago, but four times almost zero is still a very small number. This isn't San Diego, and it never has been.
Those punk F*re fans from the last game of the year in 2003 come immediately to mind. And it puts a huge smile on my face
Okaaaaayyyy...... Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems to me like the Latin American soccer goers that I've talked to don't really give a flying fart about the Crew. They just come for the soccer --- since they're fans of the game, not of the team. The couple of times that I have sat next to a group of Latin Americans, they (at least those that spoke English) have all said the same thing that almost every other ex-pat Brit has said (namely American soccer is no good, [insert your country here] soccer is much better). What you're missing Bill is that no one has banished them to the corners, except for themselves. Instead of viewing them as caged innocents, look at them for what they are --- a group that CHOOSES not to be with fans because they view the league as a joke.
The number of Latin American folks that I have chatted with cite a couple of reasons why they don't attend the matches with more regularity. 1. The team sucks. 2. Both Univision (Galavision) and Telemundo are showing matches on the weekend involving teams in the Mexican League or in Europe. Last weekend while I was in Cleveland, the Spanish-language channels had a Mexican League game and the Barcelona match.
Are the Crew wearing special jerseys today for the 5th anniversary of the stadium? Or is that their new home jerseys? IMO - The Crew should wear the yellow jerseys as much as possible..... makes them very distinct..... (in a good way)
Doesn't look like any race, white, hispanic or otherwise, seems interested in attending Crew matches anymore, all I see is yellow benches...what do you think Robbie? Hannah
I have to agree what happened to the fans of the Crew??? is it just a bad team or too rainy in Columbus to come watch the big 5 Year celebration?
It's really depressing seeing all those empty seats on national tv.... Same goes for any other team that isn;t drawing.... Why can't C-Bus be like Dortmund already??
It all comes down to Media coverage, Soccer is not considered a Major Sport so fans are not wound up like they are for the NFL. I believe some day as all the young Soccer players grow up they may respect the game more. Just have to see if the MLS can wait out a fanbase. Losing some of the better players to Europe teams doesn't help the USA since we see Minor League Soccer. CAn't blame the players who go to challenge themselves either.
There are two major factors: 1. The weather has been absolute sh!te over the last 24 hours. Tons of rain, and nobody likes going to the swampy/muddy parking lot. Add in the fact that most people don't like sitting in the rain, and that makes a huge difference. I'm not there because my wife saw the forecast and refused to go. 2. There are a lot of people frustrated with the team and the lack of action taken to make changes in the front office. Some fans don't go because they don't want to support the administration with their attendance. To get Lamar's attention, you show him an empty stadium.
I live south of Pittsburgh and traveled to 6 Crew games last year and wish I had a MLS team closer to home. The Parking lot could be fixed up a bit more there not too many Major League sports they have a mostly dirt parking lot. Then again we have the Pirates here great stadium and a minor league team.
The problem with the lot, is that its run by the State Fairground people. Crew, if they had any say in it, would have fixed it up long ago. They actually have to close off sections of the lot because of standing water. It's just terrible.
Please don't use the weather as an excuse. The low attendance strictly had to do with the play of the club. If the Crew were 3-0-2 going into the match, the place would have been full regardless of the conditions.
I admitt that I watched it on TV 'cause the wife had to work and I wasn't taking my 2 yr old out in the rain for two games in a row. Loving taking my boy, but the misses and my friend's misses get pretty peed if they find out that the kids sat out in the rain for two hours. Also the sentra doesn't hold up too well in mud bogging conditions. I love supporting the Crew, but I will miss a game every now and then to avoid giving my $7 to the Fair grounds to park in a spot assured to be puddled on both sides. Just ticks me off and causes me not to enjoy the games. My attendence doesn't change win or lose, just what I yell and at who.
i stayed up for 34 straight hours and drove 7 hours from dover, delaware to attend todays match... wearing a brown paper bag over my head. i'm starting a FAN club... Fire Andrulis Now.
I wasn't there because my son had a game, but with the weather and lack of passion shown by the team this year it would have been a tough decision if we'd been able to go. Anybody who was there care to estimate the actual attendance? Just got done watching the DVR, and I never heard a figure announced (and it would have been grossly inflated if it had been). The most disturbing thing was hearing Waldo talk over and over again about Andrulis "wishing for his players to play better soccer". This is a coaching strategy? OGHT, you made national TV for a moment, if that was you with the SA sack, looked like in the North End. The singing came through well on the broadcast, by the way. Good showing by V-Army. Clark Hunt's comments were not reassuring. Unbeaten in 3 games!!!......(and yet has anything changed?) One Greg Andrulis.. There's only one Greg Andrulis... One Greg An-droooooooo-lis, There's only one Greg Andrulis.
Is there any other way to get to games without parking? Are you allowed to walk in? (I know it would be a long walk). Or be dropped off? Just wondering.
