Yes! They're successful in the sense they're always in the playoffs, they're always in the hunt but just haven't been able to shake the 1996 curse of Nicola Caricola.

I truly thought they would have had 1 or 2 by now. Especially the different years they had super stacked rosters.

I'm curious if some of our resident boisterous Fisher detractors would have the same arguments and bitching if we had a 15 year playoff streak. Would they blame Fisher ?

 

I know of at least one person who would .

Well obviously this is satire, but Grabs has in fact "sampled (relished) the abject sadness that comes from having a club ripped away from your city by an indifferent billionaire". Did they forget? Would be some kind of special brutal if he did it again to the same club. San Jose - the only club to be relocated in MLS -> twice.

 

Every Crew fan I’ve spoken to swears that Garber did absolutely nothing to keep the team in Columbus.

If anything, he was in cahoots with Anthony Precourt and the only reason why Columbus didn’t move the franchise to Austin was because they were prevented by case, state law that had been in place since Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore.

 

Cahoots. Such a great word.

If instead of moving to Las Vegas or elsewhere, Fisher sold the team, but then the new owners moved the team and/or renamed the team, would that be any better?

For example, if the team had new owners and remained the Quakes but moved to San Francisco or some point further away in state, I suppose I would still be a Quakes fan, but I would probably not go to gamesl. If the team were to move out of state and/or change names, I would be done with MLS. So what I am looking for is for new owners who take over and keep the team here as San Jose Earthquakes. For me, any demand that Fisher sells would have to have the caveat that they remain San Jose Earthquakes. That might narrow the universe of what I would consider satisfactory buyers. I wonder if there would be anyone other than some local Silicon Valley tech guy who would even do that.

 

I think most prospective owners with big ideas (let's take Lacob as an example) would have medium-term ambitions of taking the team to SF. The feasibility aspect would be dicey to say the least, but most of them would at least entertain the idea unless they had some more personal reasons for wanting to keep the team in the South Bay. Who else would be interested? Vivek? Alexis Ohanian? Jensen Huang?

You mean the Niners would add to their soccer portfolio, or just using them as a counterexample as a team that moved in the "other" direction?

 

The Niners hypothetically could have a standing offer to purchase the Quakes just like the Warriors do the A’s. But Fisher ain’t selling.

 

I recall DeBartolo-York wanted to invest in the Sacramento MLS expansion team but I think their bid fell through during Covid.

I saw Jed York taking pictures with Juventus President , Andrea Agnelli at the Niners facility in Santa Clara but that was about all I recall in regards to the Niners and soccer.

I never remember them interested in the sport other than when Edward DeBartolo Sr. invested in the Pittsburgh Spirit indoor MISL team.

 

Vivek? Ouch. I think he lives in OH anyway. The Bay Area tech mega millionaire / billionaire class has been such a disappointment in terms of investing or even showing interest in the community. Of course there are exceptions but seems like many are either nutcases or geeks. Ohanian has shown interest in sports (recently women’s track) but he’s based on Florida and not that wealthy either.

 

Many successful amateur teams have played in the city but since professional soccer began in the USA in 1967, I can only remember 4 teams playing in San Francisco.

Golden Gate Gales played in 1967 in the precursor to the NASL.

San Francisco Fog played in the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980-81

California Victory played in the USL in 2007.

Then the San Francisco Deltas won the NASL (2) in 2017.

All outdoor teams played at Kezar Stadium and the SF Fog played at the Cow Palace.

The Cow Palace also hosted the San Jose Earthquakes during their indoor championship season in 1975-76.

No team lasted more than one season I don’t believe.

Honestly, unless they re-build Kezar, I don’t know where else they can build a soccer specific stadium.

They could share or share a park with the SF Giants, but I don't think that would be all that great to play soccer in a baseball park.

Also, they wouldn't be getting any revenue off the park if they rent from the Giants or the city, for that matter.

I heard at one time they were thinking about building a soccer stadium at Candlestick Point but then noting ever came out of it.

Anyway, that would not be an ideal place for any pro sports team.

 

The Niners own Leeds United.

 

I remember when Lalas became GM he said something like "I'd want to build a stadium here as close to San Francisco as possible". There's nothing wrong with our current stadium location. Close to downtown, virtually at the airport, easy freeway access, train access, etc. One reason to move to SF might be to kind of do a "reset" of the brand, or a restart of a new brand. But other than that, not sure that there would be a good reason. Cost would also be much greater than just upgrading our existing stadium if someone wanted to do that.
