http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20040427&content_id=1006&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp Well, Jeff Bradley wants to know. Just the other day, we were discussing how the Galaxy "depends too much on Ruiz." My knowledge of MLS history is quite limited to the last 3 years, so I'd love to here what the other Galaxy fans think of this article. Is Ruiz really that good? I would say that, just after these last 4 games, he already our most Valuable player. I'm constantly stunned by his quickness, his STRENGTH (it was sheer will that got him that goal against DC), and his guile. Who else would he have to contend with?
as with many questions so far this season, i think we need a bit more time... however should ruiz finish the goal scoring leader for the third straight year (and with 1/3 of last years total in only 4 games, only injury is going to stop the fish) then it would be difficult to argue against his being dubbed the best striker in mls history. if he can add another playoff performance like 2002 then it's no longer a question, for me at least. some other strikers up for the honor (various reasons), lassiter, preki, jaime moreno.
If Ruiz keeps up the pace he's on for the rest of this season, there's almost no way he's NOT #1 all time.
Has anyone calculated how many LAG games Carlito will miss playing for Guatamala in WCQ matches? (BTW: That is the stage where he will really make his case for European contract.) When we begin "projecting" how many goals he will get this season, don't forget that he will not be here for all our games.
Fish Ruiz is a goal poacher extrodinaire. And Quite frankly has eclipsed the talent necessary to play in MLS and deserves a legitimate shot at Europe. He's too good for MLS. I just wish I was saying that about an American player... but baby jesus seems to not care anymore about the game.
Re: Fish We'll see this weekend, but isn't crazy how fast those "what European team should Landon play for?" rumors die out? And NO!!!!! Ruiz is not "too good" for the MLS! He needs to stay here!! No one will love him like we do!! Doesn't he realize that? They'll just reject him. . .(that's my psycho-ex-girfriend routine - how's that for Ruiz-dependancy?)
Re: Fish Looks like he's pouting because Freddy is getting more attention (and money) than he is. Maybe he will go back to Germany when the loan runs out. Maybe he doesn't want to relocate to Oklahoma City when the Quacks get moved.
[talking-out-of-my-ass-and-too-lazy-to-look-it-up]wasn't guat banned from international competition?.[/talking-out-of-my-ass-and-too-lazy-to-look-it-up]
I am pretty sure that FIFA/CONCACAF relented, or the problems were worked out and Guatamala is back in the event.
no way no way his lazy arse is the best in history...how does it take someone 10 minutes to walk back to midfield - where his team is playing - after he takes a dive by the goal? i can't stand that....
no other MLS forward has had a first touch like him. (see his playoff goal in the first leg against san jose, his game winner against NE last year, or the nutmeg and miss near the end of the NE game this year) no other MLS forward can turn with the ball with his back to goal like him (see at least 3 PK's he drew last year after turning and getting tripped, and the goal that tied DC this year) no other forward in MLS can use his body like Carlos can. He can "stiff arm" while taking the ball down the field, and has no problem with a defender right on his back. Besides those things, he can shoot, and he has moves. He always finds a way to score. He can use his head, do the amazing (see bicycle against columbus) or get the garbage goal like he did with his chest against NE. He takes a beating and gets up to dish it out. I'm trying to think of other great MLS forwards, but they don't have the complete package. Lassiter was all speed and depended on good players to feed him. Stern John was similar but a little better at creating his own chances too. Hurtado and Diallo we're great finishers and strong with the ball, but not particularly good at running with the ball or anything other than shooting. I'd say if anyone comes close, it'd be Jaime Moreno in his first 3 years of the league.
John didn't stay long enough to have an impact on the league the way Ruiz has. Hurtado had Cienfuegos in his prime, Diallo had Valderrama, Moreno had Etcheverry. If Ruiz had any of those guys providing service, he'd have scored about a billion trillion kajillion goals and would be elected Personal Jesus.
Bradley's finally catching up to us. I said for awhile now that Ruiz is not only the best striker but the best player ever in MLS. Yes, he is.
Hi Dave. Thanks for plugging Carlos' "Player of the Week" award on the 6:00 AM sports news yesterday. At least you now know one other soccer fan was awake at that hour to appreciate your efforts!
You're welcome, and thank you. I have it pretty good here because my board op is also a Galaxy fan. He goes to the games as well. We are soccer shills here at the station. Rod Van Hook is starting to get a bit interested as well (gambling maybe?).
