Cougars In NCAA Second Round BYU 2 Colorado 0 --------------- BENGALS WIN, BENGALS WIN, HOLY COW THE BENGALS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!! Except, technically, they "advanced". Odds calculated from Jones ratings were 24 to 1 against Idaho State winning but, since the game was actually a tie, I suppose the odds they beat were half that. Idaho State 0 Utah 0 (Idaho State Advances on PKs)
Idaho State 0 Utah 0 (ISU advances 5-4 on penalties) This was one of those games that makes you wish that penalties weren't needed to decide these sort of situations. Utah had a 24-3 advantage in shots (15-1 in the second half), hit the post once, and once in OT had a long kick beat the goalie and went right between the far post, and a Utah player a few feet away from the post. The ball could have been about a foot to the left or right and Utah would have scored. Congrats to ISU though. Their goalie (interestingly she is a former MVP goalie from a high school in Utah) was spectacular making 12 saves, and she made the big stop in penalties. Meanwhile 5 of her teammates were perfect on their own penalty attempts.
Albyn Jones was more accurate on this one, with only a hundred point differential between the teams' ratings. Eliminate the 50 points for home field advantage (the match was played at Utah, so BYU was effectively on home territory), factor in BYU's long Championship history, and the odds look pretty even. Credit is still due Bill Hempen for winning the Big 12 regular season and taking the Buffs to the NCAA tournament for the first time. He's building a good program in Boulder.
I agree totally. A 100 point difference in ratings is barely even statistically significant. Considering the SEs of the Jones ratings, the calculated odds could easily be off by a factor of two. That being the case, BYU vs. Colorado could be an even match-up. I'd argue that the Idaho St. vs. Utah result hardly brings the Jones ratings into question, either. The expected error in odds is a factor of 2, and Idaho St. didn't win; they tied. The Jones ratings predict a 20% chance of that happening. A 20% chance is a long way from no chance. What I wonder about (and I wondered about it even before this result) is how was Colorado seeded so high in the first place?

UVA v. William & Mary 1-1; UVA advances on PKs UVA outshot W&M 22-2, made a mistake on defense and let in a free kick to tie it. Gators played awful, UCF played really well. They probably should've won, they missed a wide open net in the 2nd OT, it just went wide as Goodwin was totally off her line. 20 seconds later, it was over as Frimpong crossed a ball in to Kellgren who stuffed home the game winner. Credit to UCF though, they played hard, they played well and they probably should've won. Disappointing effort by the Gators. Freeman didn't play, but that's no excuse. Side note: it was freezing tonight, had to be in the low 40's.
