According to Goff: "Midfielder Danny Szetela tweaked a knee in training Tuesday and had an MRI exam to check for possible damage."
my understanding is that the injury migrated up from his knee and has settled into the groin. Germany trip is being planned.
Don't read too much into the preseason MRI's. It's the mid season ones that really tell the full story
per comments on Goff's blog (and Szetela's facebook) looks like this might also be the first surgery of the season
This blows. So is tweaked a euphemism for cartilage damage or (worse) ligament damage? Are we talking scope with short recovery or open surgery? So much for "being happy with our current players" or whatever the quote was. Maybe I'm over reacting, but it seems that we need central mid help now!!
yeah, it was always a dicey proposition to be betting on Szetela to have his head screwed on right and keep it that way all season. Now we'd be betting on his head *and* his knee. Best we go get someone now.
you are so right. I was trying to forget about the head issues. When you factor that into the equation, it seems pretty clear that relying on this young, unproven player to be a regular starter is a HUGE gamble. One that may pay dividends in the longterm, but is likely to make this a rebuilding year. Goff mentioned that Q, Danny, and Flo might be in consideration for that second slot in the central midfield. I haven't even seen highlight footage of Flo, so it's hard for me to have a strong opinion. The recent Q interview made it sound like Onalfo was going to clearly define Q's role and position. I thought R-mid was the most likely spot, but others say that Q is a more natural withdrawn striker. Regardless, I don't see him as an attacking or defensive central midfielder. My memory is no good. Can you guys remember whether Q was ever effective for us in a CAM role?
from Goff: #DCU's Danny Szetela tentatively scheduled to have knee surgery Friday. Early indication: minor damage, out few weeks, but no specifics yet
more news from BTB: Szetela headed for surgery 02/04/2010 3:42 PM by Doug Hicks News today from the training room has D.C. United midfielder Danny Szetela set for surgery tomorrow to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. Following the procedure, which is not a definite given tomorrow's weather warnings, the club will issue an official statement. Szetela was acquired from the Columbus Crew in 2009. Last season, the midfielder made four appearances in League play with his sole start coming against the Kansas City Wizards during the final game of the season. Szetela also played in five COCACAF Champions League matches during the campaign, starting three times.
Well, I know of at least ONE guy who won't be helping Ben Olsen shovel snow off the practice field this weekend!
Thanks for the info. Wow. So Szetela played in a whopping 9 games for us last year? Actually that's more than I thought. Looks like he'll probably be out at least a few weeks. Ample opportunity for the competition to show what they've got. Flo, if you're out there, here's your chance. If you can play some tenacious D and then transition with some quality distribution, the second central mid spot could be yours.
Looks like it will be a fun year to be a United fan. Seriously, we all better hope that Flo is over his own history of injuries and becomes the unforeseen stud that this team needs right now, cuz if he isn't ...
I respectfully refer you to 2006 when Young Daniel had an injury and, well, let's just say that nobody had to tie him down to keep him from running out there too soon or working so hard that he reinjured himself. Coming into the trainers room and kicking him out was more like it. Good luck with that.
Thanks for that bit of good cheer, Bill! If I ever need someone to rub salt in my wounds I'll call you first.
+1. I'd have some serious 'splainin to do if I were at work! Now I only have to see if Clorox will work to clean that picture out of my mind!
