Some of the other headlines were better but still not what I'd call accurate.

 

Yeah, language is the third rail in Belgium. Back in the early '80s, I was surprised that the ATM card would program your preferred language, and English was an option. I assumed I'd have to do it in French. This was when ATMs were pretty new in the US, and in Belgium, they were literally everywhere. At the time, Bruxelles was Francophone, but if you went to the suburbs in any direction, it would be Vlaams. In those places, it's great if you can say a few words, but better to stick with English if not. If you went further South it was French, and going north it was Dutch.

I went back a few years later and Brussel was definitely more bilingual. People would go up to someone in a store and start speaking Vlaams, which would not be the case even a few years earlier.

And one of the reasons Belgium went several years without a functioning government is that there were double the number of political parties most similar countries might have, since there was a party for each language. It made forming a coalition pretty difficult!

While we're talking about conversations nobody should have to have with their kids... let's start with the conversations my parents had with me. Those I have with some of my students. Those that some of my friends had with their children, and those that their children are having with their grandchildren... Somebody needs to have a conversation with Jr and tell him to "take a number and wait your turn. Someone who may or may not give a ******** what you have to tell your children will be with you eventually. But first, we'll deal with the victims".

Exactly. The restaurant attendance, while a nice feelgood moment, is probably being done by a lot of the same people who'd go anyway.

This is yet another moment where I point out that conservatives are a well-oiled machine. They don't have to be told what to do. They heard about Springfield, and hundreds, if not thousands of them called in bomb threats. It's also the moment where I get to point out that these are the people we're fighting, just in case anyone thinks conventional statesmanship or any sort of reaching across the aisle would be successful.

The best thing people who are not Haitian can do is immediately condemn and ostracize anyone else they see making any negative comments about Haitians. That won't happen.

Don't think so. There's plenty of stuff - heads on spikes, prisoners being executed, etc. - out there that this photo is quite reflective of and it's been going on from the start. No disciplinary measures measures whatsoever have been taken and the leaders of these militia groups have been interviewed as honoured guests at Kremlin receptions.

That in turn begs numerous foreign policy questions to which the USA is central.
