These people are still doing some good stuff... I'm not sure some of the humorous stuff that others do works in the long run. Although a lot of it is bloody funny I think sticking more to the facts and policy is more effective. Ian Hislop, the editor of the British satirical magazine, Private Eye, has an observation about this stuff... that one of the historic centres of satirical excellence was 1930's Berlin and, as he says, things didn't work out too well after that.
The best way to think about US politics in 2024 is to understand that it's essentially sport. If your team wins, you cheer. If your rival team wins, you're sad. And if your rival team has an open goal with the keeper face down in the grass and their shot goes out for a throw-in, well, you laugh.
This just sent me down a whack-a-doo rabbit hole. I will save everyone the time and give a synopsis. Conspiracy theorists claim the pearl earrings that VP Harris wore were actually Nova H11Audio earrings. VP Harris was "cheating" during the debate by wearing an earpiece hidden in a pair of earrings. That is why she did so well and why Trump did poorly. She was fed the questions and coached in real time on what to say. If you want to go down that rabbit hole, a lot of the websites I visited are more ads than text. I also learned that Virginia Insurers Scramble After Drivers Learn About Hidden Rebates and You Won't Believe What America's Beloved First Ladies Requested. Someone owes me 15 minutes of my life back
Cable yakker said her genius move was to pre check or lay the groundwork for the useless idiot by saying "he'll say all kinds of lies and fabrications throughout this debate" then like a good prosecutor facing the lies of a defense atrorney, systematically destroyed his baloney for millions to sse
As night follows day, Springfield is getting bomb threats. https://www.springfieldnewssun.com/...nspecified-threat/LEJGCXXHZRHT3HH3HYHABRZGT4/
The debate produced at least half a dozen clips of her looking sharp, composed and in command that have gone viral and another half a dozen of her mocking him in ways he couldn't answer. There's some overlap between the two as well. The only clips of him that have gone viral have him ranting about immigrants eating pets. The latter aren't going to help him any
A lot of the positive image she once had, especially in the early 00s when online video wasn't as ubiquitous as it is now, came from people confusing her with Naomi Klein. I don't have much time for either of them but for vastly different reasons: Naomi Klein has a work ethic and does try to think. Her ideas are often wrong IMO but she's a bona fide interlocutor so listening to her isn't a guaranteed waste of time and she can make you ask questions of yourself. Wolff is a troubled individual who confuses exhibitionism with advocacy in the same way that some strippers think they're artists.
Veteran FBI body language profiler Joe Navarro has an article in Politico following the debate. Although he seems to be pulling his punches a bit, it's enlightening. Money quote You would be hard pressed to find a time when Trump looked at Harris directly. When she spoke, he stared straight ahead, as if looking at her was his kryptonite. Good leadership requires us to confront our opponent head on. Trump’s refusal to lock eyes over 90-some minutes could be read in many ways: as a form of indifference, of disrespect, or even fear that looking at her would somehow put him on tilt. In contrast, Harris looked right at Trump when he spoke. When she addressed him, she gestured toward him, even when he wouldn’t meet her gaze. She demonstrated that she had no fear of locking eyes with him, of reaching out to him, of challenging him directly. https://www.politico.com/news/magaz...age-presidential-debate-harris-trump-00178569 He's an expert in the field, but I struggle to see how you spending 2 hours debating someone without looking at her can be characteised as "indifference". Not without putting "studied" in front of it.
I'd mentioned that the fact that a Haitian immigrant driver hit a school bus and killed a child in Springfield a few years ago, and that the GOP candidate for Sherrod Brown's Senate seat is using this incident in a TV commercial. Anyway, on 9/10, the father of the 11 year old that was killed, said this at a Springfield City Commission meeting: https://www.springfieldnewssun.com/...-to-hate-haitians/QEZC7DVPKVC5JDPLNH7H2YSRPU/ EDIT: MSNBC has covered this, as well: https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/aiden-clark-father-trump-vance-springfield-ohio-rcna170615
The only thing they have in common is their first name. Klein is a pretty thoughtful and sensible person & a talented writer and filmmaker. From my standpoint, her ideas are more often right than wrong.
I cackled when Donnie whined that Dem rhetoric almost got him killed. You're against any kind of regulation on assault weapons, douchelips
I don't think anybody posted this yet, so for those of you who missed this wonderful moment a few years ago: Naomi Wolf Learning that the Thesis Of Her New Book Was Completely Wrong, Live on Air
A lot of the memeing targets Trump, but it is JD Vance's faux concern shtick that got momentum around the sort of language that leads to pogroms against diasporas— Alexander Clarkson (@APHClarkson) September 12, 2024
