"Some people felt it was a risk for J.D. [Martin] to come to this program. But he walked away with the school record for shutouts in a single season, a master's degree and an MLS contract. ... He's the first NU player to sign with the MLS, but he won't be the last."
-- Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan. Martin, who transferred to the Chicago school from Rutgers before his senior year, signed a developmental contract with the Fire.

This was in an email from SoccerAmerica. This is the only info I have seen about this.

I think I remember him signing with MLS and training with the Fire, but not signing with the Fire.

A GK, thats interesting. Zach is obviously our #1, but Ring is a decent keeper himself...Don't know what Sacharan is thinking unless they are looking to deal Ring.

He's a developmental player. Meaning he doesn't count against the cap and the Fire still have 2 developmental roster spaces to fill up. Its not rare for a team to carry 3 goalkeepers especially if one doesn't really count.

I wasn't aware that MLS signed developmental players to contract too. Well, if he is signed, how is he going to be 'allocated'?

    not a developmental contract

He signed a regular contract with MLS, not a developmental contract. He can be used by any MLS team as an emergency GK. This move is necessitated by the change in the USL/MLS relationship. He'll be "allocated" on a temporary basis based on team need.

Hmmm what would they deal Ring for do you think? I mean if this kid has got potential they might want him over ring. Any idea what they might fetch for him?

    Ring isn't going anywhere.

Please read the entire thread, including comments from General Manager Peter Wilt.

Well then, no. No one wants him. Nobody is going to give up anything for a backup goalkeeper that has only played 1 or 2 games in MLS.
