Nice spin for the coach's native cuisine. Haven't heard of that salsa and will have to look it up.

Pochettino on Weah’s critique of World Cup ticket prices: Players should keep focus on the field

    https://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/art...ism-of-world-cup-ticket-prices-224638880.html

U.S. soccer coach Mauricio Pochettino said Thursday that he does not think players and coaches should speak out about World Cup ticket prices, which have been widely criticized as being unaffordable for many fans.

“It's not about us to provide our opinion,” he said during a video call with reporters. “Our responsibility is to play and perform on the pitch.”

Conducting the call from FIFA offices in Coral Gables, Florida, Pochettino said FIFA, the sport’s governing body, should answer questions about ticket prices, not coaches and players.

“FIFA is doing an amazing job around the world, uniting people,” he said. “I think, for sure, the media needs to ask [FIFA] directly and, for sure, you are going to receive a very good answer. … We need to be focused on the sports side and trust the organization that is in charge of soccer or football around the world that they are going to do the right things.”

I just can’t help but think Poch has been a huge miss. I can’t think of an off the field thing he has done that has made me feel proud of this team or more excited for the World Cup. It is just disappointing. He still doesn’t seem to “get” soccer in the US.

Poch when the fans are priced out: "We need our fans to follow and support the national team like they do in Argentina."

Poch when a player says the fans might not be able to afford to attend: "Focus on the pitch."

Total hypocrite. And he neglects to mention that in Argentina (and virtually everywhere else) tickets to see the national team are actually affordable for most people, which is a big reason they have such massive support.

I honestly think he's been an excellent coach, even when I've disagreed with him.

Focusing on your own training and craft is a professional thing to do, but... This is something that needs to be said. What FIFA is doing with this World Cup is frankly disgusting, and more people need to speak up about it, not less.

Was Weah asked a question and answered it?

If yes, then Poch has little to complain about.

Players are encouraged, almost expected, to do charity for various causes and, yet can't necessarily have opinions about those causes or the state of the world as if they weren't citizens living within it? Weah is fine and a grown adult. He can have opinions and comments on things beyond sports cliches after matches.

A successful World Cup will help American soccer long term. High prices will diminish this cup’s success. Cindy should privately tell him to shut up.

Weah is presumably more politically savvy than most athletes because his dad was president of Liberia.

Yeah. I don't have a problem with Weah speaking his mind.

Poch is laying some groundwork here......................

Our USMNTers are going to be asked a lot of political questions this spring/summer.
Poch doesn't want them to get involved in any of it. Just focus on the games, because all of the political stuff could be a distraction. So while Weah's comments were really innocuous, and not really about politics, he's just laying the groundwork. Don't comment on any of this off-the-field stuff.

its been his approach, and I think its a good approach.

USMNT's Pochettino sidesteps political talk before Nations League - ESPN

Also, a good approach for these boards!!!

No problem with Weah voicing his view.

Exact same no problem with Poch expressing his view.

Easy to say when you're being paid $6 million a year for not being able to win a Gold Cup.

    What an asshole.

He damn well better win in June.

We have a long history of athletes taking stands on moral issues going back decades and decades. It's a controversial thing no doubt, but it's a genuine thing, they can speak, and I'll support their right to do it. I understand why Poch thinks the way he does, I just think it's self-defeating in general, and at a time like today, w/what's going on here, it will be impossible to police it.
