I was just reading an MLS Confidential email from Soccer America that gets spammed to me a couple of days a week. The article was about possible DPs for each team. The Fire entry:

    8. CHICAGO. So far, Coach Carlos de Los Cobos – despite his laudable record with clubs in Mexico – has preferred to import players he coached with El Salvador. And there's no clear indication Fire management is eager to buy up a DP slot to replace Cuauhtemoc Blanco, a factor on the field as well as at the gate. However, another star could increase the team’s value in the re-sale market.

Increase the team's sale in the re-sale market? Where does this come from? Has anyone heard anything that would suggest that Hauptman is floating the team out there for sale?

It seems like a very odd comment to make about a team it the owner had no intention of selling.

I just read that same email and was coming here to post the same question.

I didn't get anything from Andrew at the townhall that indicated the was looking to sell. He seemed happy that the FO team was finally in place and all on the same page.

Any one going to meet the team tomorrow? I have tickets but I can't get out of work early so I won't go. Maybe some one will ask.

if you omit the "on the resale market" it's a perfectly reasonable thing to say. The team is worth more with Blanco or another big name guy. You sell more shirts, you get more sponsorship money (BestBuy jersey deal is up in January) you get more tickets.

Hopefully it's not for leveraging it on a variable rate to Gold Man Sacks, but increased value of a good in a market doesn't mean the anyone necessarily intend to sell it.

I heard that Jim Belushi is considering purchasing part of the team and that they're going to sign a fan charter and then the Fire can be as cool as the Sounders.

Actually, I did the math. We'd still be cooler than the sounders.

    Chicago Fire > Seattle Sounders

    Jim Belushi = -1 cool

    Fan Charter = 1 cool

Chicago Fire + Jim Belushi + Fan Charter > Seattle Sounders

Why would we need to "buy up a DP slot" when we aren't using our current DP slot?

Don't all teams get 2 DP slots now with an option to buy a 3rd?

    You might be right there.

So I ask a different question. Why would we "buy up a DP slot" when we aren't using our two free DP slots?

I think it was just awkward phrasing. "Use a DP slot" is probably what was meant.

Sounders have Dale Chihuly, the glass artist, as a fan. He made them a big octopus penis in team colors.
