That MIGHT be right if there were any tactics. And they certainly would not come from Ashton if they were. No player has ever respected him. Seriously hard to see how it way past time for a different direction. It doesn't have to be a 'big name' - just a coach and GM who knows how to put a cohesive unit together. College coach with more than just college experience might work... someone with experience dealing with international players/mindset as well. But this isn't working what we have.
there are tactics. in case you and others have not noticed they lined up in a 5-3-2 formation last night, a new formation. same intentions but a new tactical formation. so just not good tactics.
Who's the replacement, then? If Ben needs to go -- and I wouldn't argue against it at this point -- who is a coach you'd want to see in his place? Realistically, he'd have to be someone within DCU's budget. The club isn't going to pony up the money to pry Marcelo Bielsa away from Leeds, are they? On the other hand, it has to be someone with enough stature to make a decent player believe in the project, in case of transfers.
I think believing in the project comes with progress, no matter who the coach is. I've thrown my hat in for an NCAA coach. I love the idea of Sacho taking over, but I'd also offer the job to Jeremy Gunn in a heartbeat. Brian Wiese would be a good local option. The problem is prying these guys away from the programs they've built.
Without a change in ownership or a shake up the likes of WFT, moving Olsen doesn't really change the long term hopes of the franchise. It's just fresh air and maybe a few more wins. This starts at the top.
Bielsa's not in it for the money. DCU would be wiser to go after one of his young proteges. He has an enormous staff.
The fish stinks all the way to the top. It seems like ownership is happy/ok with ties on the road, ties at home. The best way to do that sortof thing is to park the bus and hope for the best with 10 behind the ball. Now, some teams (not us, mind you) would realize that we're not going to be good for a few years, and run out the kids to get them some experience and evaluate them and have some fun. In Ottawa, in hockey, they have "the kids are alright" as their motto this year, and they're not that good but they try and are fast and stuff. So, not only are we coaching to suck this year, we're coaching to suck in the future as well.
The irony is that given the unfortunate current fiscal realities at a lot of universities, the time to strike is NOW. Not to ever wish for such a thing, but if a well-respected college coach's program ever got the axe, said coach might be willing to work even for our pathetic club and FO.
After 115 pages, for the love of God just lock this thread. Olsen is like a Supreme Court justice -- appointed for life.
If he survives this--a 2-0 loss to a bad team on the heels of that Post article where a veteran player described the game as a 'must-win'--then I may check out on the club entirely for a while. I have nothing against him personally, and perhaps it's true that he's doing the best he can with the resources he has (I don't believe that but it's an argument) but at this point there needs to be a culture of accountability and a renewed sense of urgency. And THAT needs to start at the top.
