And what the hell is Poddington's ?

Soccer isn't good enough to make it here he says, but it's worth his time to take a few hours and write a piece totally slamming it and Beckham. That's the part I find the funniest...

I am beginning to believe that people like Mariotti, Rome, etc... are a dying bread. We need only to listen to their senseless blabbing for a short time more. And hopefully soon, soccer will be big enough that we ignore what these fools have to say.

Jay, and so many folks just dont get it.

This is a huge country, there is really no need for Soccer to have to displace the NFL,NBA, MLB, NCAA, NASCAR, NHL, PGA, PBA, WKRP, PDQ, or any other acronym that comes to mind.

There are millions of us that love the game now, and millions more who will learn (as most of us have) that we can love soccer, and baseball, football, archery, bass fishing, spelunking, etc...........

Soccer will find its place, maybe it will be bigger than the NFL in 75 years, then again maybe not. I couldnt care less. Jay, if you dont like it, dont write about it.

It was nice to see a one page color piece in the center of the sports section and the cover of sports in the trib.

You can tell that he didnt watch the game or he would of seen Beckham play a good game. It also seemed he was mad because Beckham wasnt as big as Butkus and didnt use his hands

This comment alone makes me want to rip off Jay Mariotti's head, piss in it, and then place it on the ground and have Becks take a free kick with it.

Thank you! Mariotti is a moran. I know people who don't like soccer, that refuse to read his columns just because he's a retard. Mariotti is one of a special breed of writer that doesn't even think about facts. He and Sam Smith are two of a kind.

They come up with crazy, impossible trades for our "more established" teams, without so much as checking the players salaries or contract lengths.

Mariotti claimed that if the Bulls didn't sign Ray Allen this summer, it would prove that Reinsdorf was cheap and not committed to winning. Never mind the fact that there is a FUCKING SALARY CAP, and it would have been IMPOSSIBLE for us to sign him.

Anyone who reads Mariotti is slowly killing themsleves.

Mariotti is a rabblerouser. He rouses rabbles.

He looks for the least popular or most controversial position and sticks with it, beyond all reason. Trying to find value in his columns is like teaching someone from Dallas to use the toilet - it won't work, and you have a load of crap in your hands.

I heard that when Mariotti was on Around the Horn, and he started ranting about how soccer was never going to be popular in the US. Then the other 3 panelists started to blast him and called him an idiot. Man, I wished I saw that one.

I didn't read the Marriotti piece but if he is saying bad things about soccer then I consider it a good thing. He's a total idiot and I am proud to be in the opposite of his opinion most of the time.

It's funny, on the White Sox broadcast recently, somebody sent in an email about something Mariotti wrote, and Hawk basically said he was an idiot on the air.

Look, I hate Mariotti as much as the next guy, and yeah, Joshy was right, he's a rabblerouser...nothing more, nothing less, but after sitting down and reading his column, I don't think what he says is necessarily inaccurate.

Is soccer a fringe sport here? Yes. Sorry, but it is. Will Beckham change that if he came here at the end of his career? No. Sorry, but he won't.

No, this column is probably not worth the paper it was printed on, but I don't think what he necessarily said was wrong.

Funny thing is...I still have the column that he wrote after the home opener of the 99 season when he was very complementary of the Fire...I occasionally read it when I need some shock value.

Well, they have a bit of a history. Mariotti said he would "knock Hawk's beak off" on his now defunct radio show. Hawk then tried to give him a chance to do it, and Mariotti ran.
