In excellent football news, UEFA is finally scrapping the idiotic "away goals" rule for all competitions. "All ties level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will instead go to extra time and potentially penalties." about f'n time. I have hated the away goal rule for years and years. I always thought it was ridiculous and stupid. I understand the reason why (to keep "away" teams from just defending and playing for a draw due to some "home pitch/field advantage"), but it was a stupid rule and needed to go. And now it has gone. Not a fan of penalties to decide things, but better than "who scored away from home." My proposal has been, at the end of the extra time, go to "golden goal" with each team being allowed an additional substitute at the end of extra time. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/57599780
Historically “golden goal” didn’t work because teams were too afraid to attack so the extra time was boring as hell.
Of course, teams would rather settle for penalties that run the risk of giving up a goal. Take that option away and see what happens.
