    Just wait until Namco releases Xenogears. The creator said that the story is so epic that some of the cut scenes are 30 minutes long!!! He said he wanted the player (or viewer depending on your opinion of modern day rpg's) to really feel like they were apart of the story like a popular anime.

    RPG's are interactive movies to me, so I don't have a problem with this. If I want gameplay I'll go play FIFA, Tony Hawk, or anything with Halo in the name,lol.

    I can't wait for the next game in the Chrono series. Chrono Cross was one of the best games I've ever experienced. I hope someday I can play Chrono Trigger, I heard it's as good or better than Chrono Cross.

    Re: Re: Final Fantasy 10

    Xenogears already came out like 4 years ago, the new ones called xenosaga. I can't wait for it either, if its anything like xenogears storywise, it will probably go down as one of my favorite games ever. As for Chrono Trigger, you should definitely get that game. Go out and buy it as part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles series on psx, you can probably find it at an EB world or Funcoland. That game blows Chrono Cross away so bad. Even if you liked Chrono Cross a lot (I personally hated it, only because im such a huge fan of the original I expected something better) you will like trigger better. It actually makes the chrono cross story much easier to follow.

    Honestly I hate all the cinematic stuff too, if i wanted it I'd just watch the FF movie. I wouldn't mind it as much, but it seems to take away from the gameplay, too much CGI and not enough action. They talk about the games taking X amount of hours like its all immersive gameplay, but half of it sitting around twiddling your thumbs waiting for the movie to end. The FF series IMHO has gone downhill since FF7 and FF Tactics. I've still bought every game but I've never finished 8, 9, or 10 just because I get sick of changing channels to ESPN and FSW while waiting for the movies to end. I think the secret to feeling immersed in the game isn't to passively watch movies about it, but to play in it and see the things that you do affect what happens.

    Final Fantasy X - the fantasy of pushing the (X) button.

    Xenosaga is much worse when it comes to lengthy cutscenes, though. I played a little of the Japanese import last March, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that in the first 2 1/2 hours (all I could tolerate), there was about 15 minutes of player input. A braver friend who'd played further, said it was the par for the course.

    What I liked about 9 was the fact that it was a bit more old-school than the futuristic monstrosity that was 8. I started playing the series at the original for the NES, and as such I don't like all the high-tech elements and the fact that players have been able to use essentially any skill they want. Revamping the skills system is all well and good, but I still want a game where the fighters fight, the thieves steal, and the black mages wear big ************ing straw hats.

    i agree!! FF starts sucking since ff6. i don't even want to call ff8 and 10 as final fantasy (7 and 9 are still ok)!! ff 2 to 5 are the best of the series. i've beaten ff 1 thru 7 and 9 but playing ff these days is really painful!!! i'm not interested in playing 11 and don't even want to know anything about 12.

    I agree that nothing says old-school FF like guys in big@$$ straw hats. There was a something classic about the first FF when all you could be was a black mage, white mage, fighter, and thief. Although IIRC it was a 2 stage thing where you went from like thief to ninja, or priest to white mage, fighter to knight, and something or other to black mage. I'll have to check on that.

    "you can only edit messages for 144 minutes after you have posted" I never knew that...anyway it seems my memories of the first FF aren't as sharp as I thought.

    Fighter -----> Knight
    Thief -----> Ninja
    Black Belt -----> Master
    Red Mage -----> Red Wizard
    White Mage -----> White Wizard
    Black Mage -----> Black Wizard

    Totally forgot about Red Mages...

    Hmm... I just finished FFX last week after a long layoff. I'll agree that there is a lot of dialogue, but I really enjoyed it. Ever since FF7 the series has really been more like an interactive movie than an adventure game, and I think if you really don't like to follow the story then that's life -- play an online RPG if you like.

    I turned off the captions on FFX so that I had to go through the story at the pace the creators intended (you can't clear the text with "X" if there isn't any!) and as a result really got caught up in the story and enjoyed most of the cutscenes.

    They can cut into replay value, though.

    Chrono Cross was a great game. Not as good as Chrono Trigger, sure, especially given the time it came out, but still excellent: creative, beautiful, great music and tons of fun. FF6 was also excellent.

    I just started FFIX again, looking forward to getting into it.

    Well admittedly I'm spoiled by the fun I had in Ultima Online, but as for now I'm not playing any MMORPG's until Star Wars: Galaxies comes out.

    That's not true. Sony owns a portion of Squaresoft, so the series will always at least be on a sony system. Square is making games for gamecube though, but its going to be a completely different series than the ones on ps. The first ones called Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.

    I believe VIII and X were both made by the same production team (I could be talking out of my ass though ;-) )...I also think I heard that XII is gonna be done by the same production team that did IX, so maybe you'll like it too. ;-)

    I liked FFX actually, the fighting engine was actually really well done, and I really liked the voice acting too (mostly...a couple of the side characters voices sucked). The characters themselves were great too, I thought, and I really liked the idea of the Al Behd language within the game. The lack of freedom sucked, but, I really liked the story, so that makes up for it.

    Me too. I've only played FFII on emu, so it'll be great to play it on an actual game system. I'll be interested to see how the translations of the two compare, actually. And it'll be great to play FFI again.

    I also hope they release FFIII (japanese) on the PS or some other game system soon, that's probably my favorite FF...it's really good for a NES game, and it's got some great music too.

    i don't wanna bring up soccer topic here but why do you support vegalta sendai? what's so special about them?

    the lack of freedom always comes with final fantasy. it's becoming more horrendous everytime new ff comes out.

    I stayed there(in Sendai) for 3 months on an internship a few years ago and went to a couple of their games. They sucked *bad* back then ('99), so I can't believe they're actually in J1 now.

    True, but I guess there are other RPG series to play if you want freedom...heck, I think Unlimited SaGa is coming out soon, and the SaGa series usually gives you too *much* freedom! ;-)
