Hart Forster Heaton Clyne Walker Smalling Cahill Stones Jagielka Rose Wilshere Dier Milner Drinkwater Alli Barkley Lallana Sterling Kane Vardy Rooney Sturridge Welbeck Only close decision was whether or not to bring a second specialized left back. I think however Clyne can offer cover here if needed. Tough on Bertrand but you just can't leave Walker behind imo. Jags hamstring needs monitoring. If he wasn't fit I would probably bring Delph and use Dier as 4th choice cb cover.
True on the basis about versatility but god help us if Carrick would have to play centre back, he would get murdered against International forwards. The only changes from you're team I would make would be to take out Carrick with Jags ( even though that depresses me but who else is there thats not green at centre back ) and take out Walcott and replace him with Walker. I would take 8 defenders myself with two specialists at right back and left back. Not sure Shaw will make it so if he doesnt I would replace him with Bertrand.
Hart Forster Heaton Clyne Walker Rose Bertrand/Shaw if fit Cahill Stones Smalling Dier Wilshere/if not fit, then Delph Drinkwater Milner Alli Barkley Sterling Lallana Kane Vardy Sturridge Welbeck Rooney
Hart Heaton Forster Gibbs Clynne Stones Smalling Cahill Bertrand Jones Drinkwater Ali Dier Henderson Barkley Sterling Lallana Carrick vardy sturridge Rooney Kane Welbeck
Go on then. Hart Forster Foster Smalling Jagielka Cahill Stones Clyne Walker Bertrand Shaw (or Rose if Shaw doesn't make it) Dier Wilshere Delph Alli Barkley Lallana Sterling Welbeck Kane Sturridge Rooney Vardy I'm assuming that Henderson won't make it back in time, but I'm not sure who I'd replace even if he does. I probably ought to be assuming that Shaw won't make it but I love him so I'm giving in to wishful thinking. My squad's changed a fair bit over the last few months and it might again. Walcott would have been a starter for me, never mind a squad member, if his recent performances hadn't been so non-descript. I'd probably also have taken 7 defenders but I've been persuaded by the arguments about the importance of specialist full-backs to our width in attack. Stones is in there largely for experience, but it is a little concerning how long his bad patch is dragging on for. Hopefully his next manager will be able to do something about it.
I'm becoming torn regarding the decision of taking Jagielka. Will almost certainly be his last England campaign and he's only going as cover. If he could be relied upon at this level then I would pick him but he's never really been comfortable at the highest level. Hart, Forster, Heaton Clyne, Walker, Rose, Bertrand, Smalling, Cahill, Stones. Dier, Wilshere, Barkley, Lallana, Alli. Rooney, Vardy, Sturridge, Kane, Sterling, Welbeck. My two remaining places would go to a runner/energy option (Milner/Drinkwater). The other options goes to either a centre back (Jagielka/Jones) or an extra midfield option (Carrick/Delph).
I can't believe so many are endorsing bringing four specialized full backs. That's a complete misuse of resources imvho.
Fullback is a big position in the modern game. When they are expected to provide attacking support.. In my squad I had 3 full backs and other players who can cover the position.
We will lack genuine width further up the pitch and our style relies on full backs to be able to do alot of work further up the field to create space. This means playing this way in tournament football is very demanding of the full backs. We simply don't have other squad options that can replicate that style if they are to stand in. Our weakest areas of the squad are deeper CM roles and CB's. It could be argued overloading in these areas is pretty redundant.
Hart, Forster, Heaton. Clyne, Walker, Rose, Shaw, Smalling, Cahill, Stones. Dier, Wilshere, Alli, Sterling, Barkley, Lallana, Drinkwater. Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Welbeck, Sturridge. Walker and Shaw will be the reserved full backs, but Stones and Dier can play as RB's too. Dier can play as a CB as well. Gotta include Sterling with his skills and pace. I'd say that's one of the top five most threatening attacks in the competition. I'd start Shaw over Rose, but I don't want to be too unrealistic. Wilshere, Alli, and Sterling will be a tidy trio in the midfield. Concerned how we'll do against Russia. If we beat them then it'll set the tempo for us to win the rest of our group games.
Replace Sterling with Drinkwater and swap positions with Alli and that's my team for the opening match. Caveats being Wilshere proves his fitness in the friendlies.
I'm afraid that Drinkwater isn't suited for this position. He's better off the bench. Alli played in a deeper role against Germany and he was the best player.
I personally don't get the hype about Dier. To me he looks to be a centre half playing in midfield. Poor touch and ball manipulation.
It's all about opinions of course but I like Dier despite him losing it last night. Maybe it's just me but I don't see him lose the ball that often and he's good on the ball plus his protection of the defense is usually solid.
I'm struggling to see the merits of naming the squad before the last round of premier league fixtures. Players who have been left out may end up being needed due to injury and will generally not be good for squad moral.
I hope Woy doesnt do that "standby squad" bullsh** players who had disputes with this list have been blacklisted by Woy and never picked again .
No, that is the same formation. I literally looked up the formation they played on pasted that onto here. That was Alli playing a deeper role.
