Next game for Chayse in the playoffs is Harvard Westlake and USWNT prodigy and budding superstar Alyssa Thompson who already has a cap for the US senior women's team and a contract with NIKE at 17 y.o and has scored 48 goals in 18 games for her school. Good test for Chayse. Alyssa is a year older than Chayse and grew up playing soccer against boys.

    Prep Rankings for Grace Thao
    #94 - National Ranking
    #20 - State Ranking
    #10 - Midfielder / National Ranking
    https://twitter.com/gracethao24/status/1619483500754907136

Grace Thao (Irvine, Calif.) – Midfielder
Thao, a 5-3 midfielder, is a native of Irvine, Calif. She will have won four letters in soccer at Orange Lutheran High School. Thao scored six goals last season and handed out 10 assists. In three seasons, she has totaled 24 goals and 23 assists. She was All-CIF and Offensive Player of the Year last season and is a multiple-time All-Trinity League selection. Her team won the Trinity League in her freshman season, where she was also named the Newcomer of the Year. Thao has played for West Coast Futbol Club, while also earning USL Academy Cup MVP. She’s a three-star recruit and ranked No. 27 in the Southern California region by TDS. She’s also No. 168 in the IMG 200.

“Grace is a super creative attacking player that can play up top, or in an advanced midfield role, Sanchez said.” She is a fantastic ball striker who is equally adept at scoring goals as she is at setting them up. Grace plays her club soccer with West Coast GA, but also trains and plays in the UPSL. She is seeking out additional avenues to train and get better that will really prepare her for Pac-12 soccer.”

Alyssa didn't play. She was just drafted first in the NWSL draft by Angel City so she is a professional now and her club didn't want her to get injured playing for her school.

Chayse Ying and Flintridge Prep lost to powerhouse Harvard Westlake via penalty shootout during the second round of the CIF playoffs. Flintridge was ahead 1-0 with 5 minutes to go but a red card on their goalie allowed their opponents to mount a comeback.

Chayse was being double and triple teamed while playing keepaway.

I don't know if anybody watches the NHL over here, but Chayse reminds me of Detroit's legendary magic man Pavel Dastyuk. Her ankle biters leaves her opponents dropping like flies and discombobulated just like Dastyuk used to do.

Welcome to the PWNT U20's Ari! Another good player to add to the team this time on defence. With a June 2007 Birthdate, she also qualifies for the PWNT U17 as well and will be one of the youngest players on the U20 team at 15 y.o. Pretty impressive to be ranked # 17 PrepSoccer defender in California at that age.

Comments by Wales manager Gemma Grainger prior to their match against the PWNT:

“One of our biggest strengths is our diversity in terms of experience,” explained Grainger. “One of the things we're looking forward to is playing world opposition, and the Philippines will have a different philosophy and style of play to the European teams. It will be a great test for us. We want to make sure that we can build momentum as a team, and we will plan for the three games and make sure that the team continue to build on that momentum. We're not going to be able to put the same starting line-up out in every game, and we will utilise the time during matches and training for us to get out of the competition what we need to.”

    https://www.philstar.com/sports/202...ilipinas-play-despite-loss-pinatar-cup-opener

Philippine women's national football team head coach Alen Stajcic had little to complain about despite his team's narrow 1-nil loss against Wales in their opening match in the 2023 Pinatar Cup in Pinatar, Spain on Wednesday (early Thursday morning, Manila time).

After giving up a penalty kick at the tail-end of the first half, the Welsh seized the lead as they scored the lone goal of the match.

"We don’t like losing and we’ve spoken about that before but I’m really pleased with what we did tonight," said Stajcic after the match.

"There are usual issues of not being able to keep the ball better which is something we have to work on. Considering that we’re in preseason and the opposition right in the middle of their season, the jetlag, we’ve had delayed flights, we’ve had players ill and we’ve had players coming in really late to camp, that was an amazing effort – probably one of our best in terms of effort," he added.

Among the issues faced by the Filipinas was the absence of Jaclyn Sawicki and Sarina Bolden, who had just arrived from Australia and were therefore unavailable against Wales.

"A lot of things to look forward in the next week and hopefully we can freshen the squad up for Game Two and see how we go against Scotland, who are as good as a team or even better (than Wales)," said Stajcic.

The Filipinas face Scotland on Saturday, February 18.

Ahead of the match, our head coach said, “The Philippines game has come around quickly which gives us an opportunity to refocus and put things right.
“It was a disappointing result against Iceland but there were lots of positives in terms of the overall performance. The players know what they are capable of but it’s a case of performing at a high level consistently.
“We have to be clinical and precise against Philippines who are a very disciplined side. They’re heading for the World Cup, so they’ll want to get as much confidence as possible before the tournament.
“We want to win every match that we play and we’ll be doing everything we can to ensure that our hard work is rewarded at full-time tomorrow”.

There is going to be a lot of Filipino fans traveling to watch the Scotland game today(taking advantage of the weekend) from all over Spain. Should be a good atmosphere.

A more offensive minded lineup compared to the Wales game.

    HT Philippines 0-1 Scotland

Much more open game compared with the Wales game with the Philippines employing a pressing attack. We had some good ideas and chances but the final touch seems to be missing resulting in offsides and missed opportunities. However they gave up a goal in one of the weakest goals I have seen our usually reliable goaltender Olivia McDaniel ever give up negating much of that effort.

    FT Scotland 2-1 Philippines

Decent result for the Philippines against a much higher ranked team but still a lot of work to do for them before the World Cup. Merryl Abrahamsen's free kick goal late in the game keeps the deficit to just one goal.

A couple of observations. The Philippines lack of height against European opposition combined with their inability to keep possession hamstrings their offence a lot. Normally they use their height to dominate ASEAN teams particularly when it comes to corners and free kicks but against taller European teams they are the ones losing those battles.

A team can offset their lack of height if they can keep possession and create plays based on a short passing game as demonstrated by many South American teams as well as clubs like FC Barcelona but unfortunately the Philippines inability to keep possession doesn't allow them to use that aspect of the game to offset their lack of height.

Finally I thought this was one of the weaker perfomances by our usually reliable goaltender Olivia McDaniel. I thought they were both preventable goals. She doesn't play professionally. I think her lack of playing time outside of the games played by the Philippines just doesn't provide her the reps to keep her sharp and make the appropriate decisions in game.

    More observations:

After replaying the game, I would have to say that the goals McDaniel gave up were not easily preventable. The first goal was due to a deflection from a Philippine player and the 2nd resulted from a defender missing a header from a corner kick.

Secondly despite the loss there were a lot of positive moments in the game. They pressed high in the first half and not just bunkered up and still held Scotland to only 2 shots in goal while having their near chances on offense too.

Of course when the Scots added Real Madrid's Caroline Weir and other starters in the 2nd half, their play suddenly improved. Nevertheless the Philippines only conceded another goal and got one back late in the game.

A few recently added players also shown brightly in the game including Merryl Abrahamsen who scored the lone goal for the Philippines and right back Alicia Barker who was arguably the best defender in this game.

The defence was generally solid and if they could add a good defencer like Angela Beard(who excelled in the top flight in Denmark and is doing the same in Australia's A League) to shore up the left back position when she gets her passport they would be even harder to score upon.

A few other players might also be good additions to the mix moving forward including some of the junior U20 players participating in the AFC U20 qualifiers next month particularly our 17 y.o. prodigy Chayse Ying who can add an element of offensive flair generally lacking in our attack.

She will be part of the U20 WNT that will be playing in the AFC U20 qualifiers next month. They have a very strong team in their group (China) because they didn't participate in the last cycle, so they will be tested.

After that they can call her up again in April for the first round of the Olympic qualifiers as well as in May for the SEA Games particularlysince a lot of regular players will be missing since it is outside the FIFA window so she will get plenty of chances to show what she can do at the senior level against teams like Thailand who have played in the FIFA World Cup intercontinental Playoffs or have made the World Cup like Vietnam.

Finally she can be called upon for the June WC preparatory friendlies before being considered for the final roster.

She will get her opportunities practically every month starting March until June to prove herself before the World Cup in July.

The Philippine-Scotland match stats showed that Scotland had most of the possession but in terms of shots(9-5) and shots on target(4-3) the disparity wasn't that big. The Philippines had missed opportunities of their own that went begging as they pressed high on offence instead of just bunkering like you would expect a much lower ranked team(#53 vs #25) would do.

It is a shame some of the other youth players who attended the U17/U20 tryouts in California won't be able to play for the Philippine women's junior teams yet as their passports will take some time to sort out. Many of them are players to look out for in the future though.

Post match interview by Scotland's coach:

    https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1279487966304469

He described it as a game of 2 halves where Scotland were under pressure and uncomfortable for most of the first half and were having difficulty making plays. They did better in the 2nd half but also conceded a free kick late in the match.

Another different starting lineup for the third game. This is the first time I have seen Eggesvik as a sub when available to play since she won the position the starting position last year.
