Figo and Rui Costa both said that they were not happy with Deco joining the Portugal National Team (when Deco became a Portuguese citizen). There may be some other players on Portugal that are not happy that Deco is on the team. There could be some controversy if Deco starts.

What a bonehead move on Figo's part! Just before probably his last chance at winninng something significant for his country, he opens his big mouth to create a rift in the team...Portugal must enter the tournament unified with one goal to win the championship....

I fear that this may cause some unrest in their camp..

SHUT UP FIGO! DECO IS A PORTUGUESE CITIZEN NOW...R U UPSET THAT SCOLARI IS ALSO BRAZILIAN???

It's nothing new, all the players know how Figo feels about this situation. I think there could be controversy if Deco starts and Rui Costa is left on the bench, but if Deco doesn't start, I doubt there will be any problems inside the Portugal clubhouse. Figo answered a question honestly and Deco probably won't take offense to it.

by the performance in the last games, its time Scolari becomes a real coach and bench's Rui Costa and Figo, by starting Ronaldo and Deco

I watch a interview with Figo these afternoon, televised world wide by rtp international and he didn't mention anything about Deco,

could by somebody trying to brake the team, the players got more class then that, special when 4 or 5 players in the starting team are from Porto

by the way Vitor Baia his on the way to Cuba on vacation, in case Ricardo has a bad game he don't want the Porto fans calling his name

Rui Costa and Figo are still the key players for Portugal.

Only because theyre starting when they shouldn't be. Well, Rui Costa at least. Deco right now is ten times the player he is.

And I just read the article. How is it bad? He says on principle he does not agree with a player changing nationalities to play for Portugal, but:

That's a great compliment no matter how you slice it.

Portugal will win or lose with Rui Costa and Figo starting. Keep Cristiano Ronaldo and Deco on the bench, they will have their chance to start in the 2006 World Cup.

Keeping your best p[layer on the benc (Deco) doesn't make sense.

Portugal will lose with Rui Costa, probably will with Deco too ultimately, but they'd have a greater chance.

I think this is a case of the media trying to create some controversy. Figo was asked about the situation with Deco, and he just reiterated what he already said when Deco was first naturalized. I don't think it will carry over to the pitch.

And I agree that Deco should start. He's shown better form over the last two years. I don't know about Cristiano. I think with his style, pace, and inexperience, he's better off as a substitute for Figo or Simao.

Looks to me more like the media is trying to come up with a story other than the painful one of "so, who's going to be scoring goals for Portugal".

I'd rather see Cristiano Ronaldo & Deco in the starting lineup then RuiCosta & Figo.

If this is true or not, i dont care, the players are free to say what they want!
Figo said it before that he was against the naturalization of players, end of story, there are absolutely no problem at all, i think that the last thing a team needs is hipocrisy, everyone should respect each other opinions.

Sure you can respect each others opinions... but, he shouldn't have said that!! I believe it's extremely stupid to criticise another player on your team. Keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything good to say. Especially before a huge tournament like this it can create a unbalance in the team. For example , the Porto players siding with Deco and the Figo and Rui Costa club. He should have left his comment after when he's gone from the NT.

Figo already speaks Portuguese with a Spanish accent, and were was he yesterday when Ronaldo crossed to the right wing? 3 or 4 times Ronaldo's effort were wasted because Mr. Figo was meddling in the middle were he does not belong.

Is any German player complaining that their star Kevin Kuraniy, was also born and raised in Brazil?

Figo was the best player for Portugal against Greece.

Did he score??? did we win??? NO!! He held on to the ball way to long and resorted to dribbling when he didn't have to. Sure, when you're one on one with the defense it's ok to dribble but when you're on the wing and there's no place to go...PASS the BALL!!!

What did anyone else do? The only other one who played decent was Cristiano Ronaldo and he himself could "pass the ball" a little more. Figo seemed like he actually cared about the game, unlike the rest of them. Figo is the best player on Portugal.

Figo wasn´t the poorest, but in my opinion he made one bad game, just want to remember you the second half when he didn´t gave the ball to anyone, and went to the center of the field, making Deco playing at the right wing, and last but not the least i frequently saw him simply walking one the field, how many times did any of you saw Figo helping the defense or simply making some attacking pressure?
I still believe he should start against Russia but i expect another kind of comitement, if not i think the right thing to do is simply leave the national team, hopefully Rui Costa and F. Couto will follow is steps...

and Figo was afraid of Manuel Jose coaching methods, was hard for the boys, I would tell you if Manuel Jose was the coach, Baia would be in goal
