Figo a caminho dos Estados Unidos

    "

According to a protuguese newspaper, the midfilder has arrived to an agreement with AEG to play in MLS next season. He will be playing either C. Fire, H. Dynamo or LA Gaylazy.
Neither one checked that Chicago Fire was sold to a private group. But we will happily take him, if AEG wants to give him to us.

He would obviously be a DP so that rules out LA or the Fire whose slots are already filled.

FWIW I doubt that he's on his way to MLS in 2008.

I knew Mark McCullers would do something useful in the offseason.

And, I doubt that Dynamo would want him, so...I'm gonna call BS on this rumor.

Let's look at the bright side: at least European newspapers learned a name of more than one MLS team!

Figo should have no problem getting a green card, since he was made Mrs. Tony Sanneh back in 2002.

    Repped.

Tony Sanneh owned Luis "Man of a Million Stepovers that do Nothing" Figo.

Apparently he signed a two year contract worth $7 mill to play here....

    link: http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/dec31j.html

Where would he go? I'd imagine LA couldn't afford him, so would the Houston sign him? Doesn't seem like a good fit. Do they even need him?

I would have liked to see Figo in New England or NY.

I might be wrong but don't all contracts go through the MLS F.O. not the owners?

If the Krafts would ever use their DP, he might be a good ethnic drawer in New England...

Luis Figo. Good enough for Inter Milan, not good enough for Houston Dynamo!

i dont think it would be a smart signing for houston, they've gotten this far without a dp, why should they need one? he would just take all the attention away from the team

Re: Figo in his way to MLS - "Correio da manha"

According to Oliver Luck, no, we don't need/want a DP. He has said that we would have to give up too much in the way of cap room.

However...with the small increase in cap (~$100K-200K?) plus the release of Dalglish ($100K), the savings on Boswell (cleared around $20K), and the rights to Corrales that we will probably sell (allocation money?), we could squeeze in $400K, plus the small increase in salary everyone will get. But we'd be absolutely maxed out (if not a bit over). Don't know how flexible the cap is (my guess is it's not very hard).

Do we need him? Not in midfield. DeRo, Clark, Mulrooney, Holden, Davis, Mullan (assuming he returns). Hard to bench any of those guys. As a striker? I dunno....maybe like Donovan and Ching play for the Nats would be ok but....eh....I just don't see it.

I'll call BS till I hear something from Goff or Fallas or Davis or one of those guys who always knows what's going on in MLS/Houston.

I don't think AEG could sign anyone for Chicago as the Fire are operated by another investor now.

Re: Figo in his way to MLS - "Correio da manha"

The only way this rumor makes sense is if either

    a) Blanco is retiring or
    b) DeRo is going to Toronto or Europe for next year, and Figo is being brought in to be their new A-mid.

Re: Figo in his way to MLS - "Correio da manha"

Figo should sign for New England there are many Portuguese in New England, plus New England lacks a good outside mid. The only problem is Bob Kraft is way too lazy and doesnt want a new stadium so he would play in a American Football stadium that is less than half full and who wants to play in that.

I don't know if the rumor is true, although I suspect that like the old Zidane rumors it means that they're talking. But do people really think AEG front office and the Dynamo are thinking .... gee, we have a chance to sign an international superstar, but I'm not sure we want to cut into the playing time of Stuart Holden or Corey Ashe.

Maybe LA Galaxy obtain the DP slot from Houston. The question is, what do LA give up. Then again AEG owns both clubs...........

There is a big Portuguese community in San Jose, but I doubt he would come here. For some reason they always end up in Boston but if AEG bought his contract.......we all know where he will end up.

Re: Figo in his way to MLS - "Correio da manha"

If Dom said "no", then the answer would be "no". He doesn't care how good a player is...if he doesn't want him on the team, said player won't be on the team. Case in point: Blanco. Was coming to Houston, Dom said no, and now is in Chicago. Dom's more worried about team coherence than how good a player is individually.

Don't see Figo fitting that dynamic. And besides, we have DeRo in the AM spot and he did just win us a title. I doubt he would be moved or traded to fit Figo
