The Draw is going to take place today, and I was wondering who people wanted in our group. Here are the teams: AFC: - Korean Republic - Japan - Saudi Arabia - Uzbekistan CAF - Burkina Faso - Côte d'Ivoire - Egypt - Mali CONCACAF - Canada - Mexico - Panama - United States CONMEBOL - Argentina - Brazil - Paraguay - Colombia OFC - Australia UEFA - Spain - Germany - Slovakia - Republic of Ireland - Czech Republic - England HOSTS - United Arab Emirates To my understanding the draw is not like the World Cup, and there are no seedings. I would love to see a group: USA, Uzbekistan, UAE, and Paragury. But I doubt that will happen.
No matter how the groups end up, most likely a Conmebol team will win. Last 10 years Youth Championships finals: 2001 Argentina 3 - Ghana 0 1999 Spain 4 - Japan 0 1997 Argentina 2 - Uruguay 1 1995 Argentina 2 - Brazil 0 1993 Brazil 2 - Ghana 1
They are seeded. The teams are placed into 4 pots according to their seeds and then 1 team from each pot is placed into each of the 6 groups.
I stand corrected here are the pots: Bowl A: United Arab Emirates Korea Japan Saudi Arabia Uzbekistan Australia Bowl B: Spain Germany Slovakia Ireland Republic Czech Republic England Bowl C: Egypt Ivory Coast Mali Burkina Faso Canada USA Bowl D: Argentina Brazil Paraguary Columbia Panama Mexico I change my picks due to this new developtment: USA, Mexico/Panama, Ireland, Uzbekistan That would be a group where we should qualify easily. The Mexico game would be great. Shades of Japan/Korea 2002.
I am under the impression that Canada/USA cannot play Mexico or Panama. Instead, they will play one of the four South American teams.
Anyone know what time this draw is taking place? Also anyone know why Mexico and Panama get to avoid South American teams and Canada and us get the shaft?
I thought it was supposed to take place at 10am EST, but it looks like the draw hasn't happened yet. It is supposed to be on live at fifa.com
I think we'd want to avoid Japan from Pot A and probably UAE, since its always tough to play the hosts. We definitely don't want to draw Spain from Pot B, who often do well at U-20. Otherwise, this pot seems pretty even. I'm pretty sure we can't get Mexico or Panama, and it seems obvious that we don't want to end up with Brazil or Argentina. Otherwise this is a crapshoot, given that the two teams that were clearly the best at the 2001 U-17 WC aren't here (France and Nigeria, the finalists, and they were in our group). Burkina Faso finished third in that tournament, so they might be a good team again, but they are in our pot. I would like to see the US get a chance at Egypt (African U-20 champions) in this tournament, since Egypt knocked us out at the 2001 U-20 WC. Since they too are in our pot, that match-up would have to come in a later round.

And now they get Burkina Faso... Canada has an interesting group with Czech Republic and Australia. The US also has a tough group...
