    There is one fact that simply amazing when you look at the results between Iran and South Korea since our memorable 6:2 match in the 1996 Asian Cup: since that victory, South Korea has not been able to beat Iran in regulation in any of our numerous competitive games. Not in World Cup qualifying and not in the Asian Cup.

    That is remarkable even if some of our losses after extra time, or on penalties, or even some of our draws against South Korea (e.g., 1:1 in Seoul in the 2010 qualifiers), have been quite bitter results for Iranian fans. Perhaps as bitter as the taste left with South Korea after some of our memorable victories in this period, in particular our 6:2 win in the quarterfinals of the 1996 Asian Cup, our 4:3 win in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Asian Cup, and our pair of wins in these World Cup qualifiers. In fact, probably more bitter than the last two, since South Korea qualified to the World Cup despite those losses to Iran.

    P.S.

    Iran's results against South Korea since 1996, with games that our highlighted the only ones that produced a winner in regulation time.

    Asian Cup
    1996 (quarterfinals): Iran v South Korea 6:2
    2000 (quarterfinals): South Korea v Iran 2:1 aet (1:1 in regulation)
    2004 (quarterfinals): Iran v South Korea 4:3
    2005 (preliminary qualifiers in Seoul): South Korea v Iran 1:1
    2006 (preliminary qualifiers in Tehran): Iran v South Korea 2:0
    2007 (quarterfinals): South Korea v. Iran 0:0 (South Korea won on penalties)
    2011 (quarterfinals): South Korea v Iran 1:0 aet (0:0 in regulation)

    World Cup Qualifying
    2009 (final rounds in Tehran): Iran v. South Korea 1:1
    2009 (final rounds in Seoul): South Korea v. Iran 1:1
    2012 (final rounds in Tehran): Iran v South Korea 1:0
    2012 (final rounds in Seoul): South Korea v Iran 0:1

    P.S.S.

    If you throw in friendly matches, the South Koreans have a couple of wins against us, but we defeated them in the last friendly we had against them in Seoul.

    Friendly Results

    2001 (in Cairo) South Korea v Iran 1:0
    2005 (in Seoul) South Korea v Iran 2:0
    2o11 (in Seoul) South Korea v. Iran 0:1

    reality before 2010 iran was a little better. but post 2010 korea sends multiple players out to europe, and iran got lucky with those wins. plus iran didnt really face the real korean squad in the 2 qualifiers match especially the last one. plus we had a handicap cause our coach is a moron and didnt call up our best players. pre 2010 iran played korea with attacking attractive football. post 2010 you guys played very defensive counter attacking football. but this is football the better team wont always win. exm north korea 1- japan 0 in the qualifers. but if you guys keep going at this pace korean and japan will only way ahead in the future. we are sending youngsters to europe constantly. we have youngsters playing for top clubs in major leagues. your nekounam/ando generation are getting old. you use to send players like karimi to clubs like bayern. now you guys get delighted when shitty clubs in dutch league and russian league sign players.

    I agree with the part I have highlighted. But that makes our results after 2010 even more interesting, while it also makes some of our extra time and penalty losses before 2010 that much more bitter.

    Sad to see Iraq slide like that. We used to be in the top 10 at least. We had a significant improvement over the last years and went to 6th/5th, and look at us now.

    Hope that we can climb up.

    I think the 2012 edition was their last Challenge Cup. They did not take part in the 2014 edition, and they will participate in the 2019 qualifiers

    they dont play too many friendly games so i guess it is important for them. judging by their results in this tournament, i think its safe to assume that they play their reserves and/or youngsters.

    First of all congrats to S. Korea for beating a top Swiss team.
    Secondly, what a beastly performance by Japan to make Netherlands look mediocre.
    Lastly, hope you Aussies lose less than 6 goals in your next friendly vs. Costa Rica or at least get in a draw. :D

    Not trying to stir up anything. Go on and mock Iran and FIFA rankings but I'm simply just saying how things will be if so and so happens.

    Since the way FIFA rankings works, Iran will be first in Asia for the first time since 2005 when they were 15th in FIFA rankings: IF they beat Lebanon on 19th November, regardless of Japan, S. Korea, and Australia friendlies/ Uzbeks ACQ game.

    FIFA rankings fluctuate too much, to take them seriously. In any case, Japan is the best team in Asia, regardless what FIFA ranking might show next month. imo

    how about this "World Football Elo Ratings"
    AFC nations in the top 100

    26) Japan
    32) Australia
    35) Iran
    42) South Korea
    47) UAE
    51) Uzbekistan
    56) China
    58) North Korea
    69) Jordan
    71) Kuwait
    73) Oman
    83) Iraq
    84) Saudi Arabia
    93) Syria
    96) Bahrain
    98) Qatar

    better or worse ?

    • Basic calculation principles
    The basic principle behind the Elo ratings is only in its simplest form similar to that of a league, unlike the FIFA tables who effectively run their table as a normal league table, but with weightings to take into account the other factors, the Elo system has its one formula which takes into account the factors mentioned above. There is no first step as in the FIFA system where a team immediately receives points for the result, there is just one calculation in the Elo system.

    The ratings are based on the following formulae:

    [IMG]
    or

    [IMG]
    Where;

    [IMG]
    = The new team rating
    [IMG]= The old team rating
    [IMG]= Weight index regarding the tournament of the match
    [IMG]= A number from the index of goal differences
    [IMG]= The result of the match
    [IMG]= The expected result
    [IMG]= Points Change

    The status of the match is incorporated by the use of a weight constant. The weight is a constant regarding the "weight" or importance of a match, defined by which tournament the match is in, they are as follows;

    Status of match

    Tournament or Match typeIndex (K)
    World Cup Finals60
    Continental Championship and Intercontinental Tournaments50
    World Cup and Continental qualifiers and major tournaments40
    All other tournaments30

    i agree what ur saying. u dont see the japanese posters showing off their rankings every month. but the part when u said that iranians (persians) are arabs its a little insensitive. i know alot of persians and they take serious offense to that. the best action is to just keep quiet and let them celebrate. because who cares. no one else does
