Seeding had nothing to do with the draw. All AFC nations are put into pot 3 at the draw currently. And groups are drawn at random from each of the 4 pots. So no it has no affect. And Asian cup seeds etc are made based on the Asian nations results in the world cup so the top 4 sides are seeded.
Further to the other comments on this. You will note that they LARGELY DIDN'T EVEN USE IT. It only chose the top eight seeds (a team for each group), the rest of the pots were based entirely on continental groups (otherwise how did Japan and Croatia end up in the same group?). J
Even if Australia is #1 by 2010, i don't think Australia will win Asian cup 2011. IMHO. Apparently those rankings are worthless when you are facing Saudi Arabia, Iran, South Korea, Japan and Australia's boogey team Iraq.
Rankings don't mean anything no matter who you face. It all depends on how the teams play on the day. All of thge teams you mentioned are more than capable of beating us on a given day. The rankings reflect consistancy of results (note I said results not performance).
I'm quite happy we've reached a new height in our footballing history, however that same history also deems us to ignore the rankings as they really prove nothing. All in all it is simply a number; if you take it seriously, be proud of it, if not, the same advice remains.
As they should. Do you really think FIFA is obtuse enough to seed a team like the USA just because its in the top 8 for that particular month? Please...Whatever process FIFA decides to use, it better have more weight than FIFA rankings. Especially when alot of teams are ranked so highly only because of 'padded' results. Sorry to sound like a Europhile, but they have a point in this aspect...had Aussie been in UEFA do you think they would be ranked this high?
I don't think he had the USA in mind. If they keep the current system it looks like the right teams will end up with seeds so FIFA probably wont change it. However if something strange happens eg Argentina qualify but slip down in the seed rankings) you will probably see a revamp. If anything FIFA rankings favour European teams. A good example is that after Australia defeated the dutch in a friendly last year, they actually received less ranking points than a similarly ranked UEFA side would have got simply because the results of Asian teams are discounted. We received a high ranking this time purely because of where we are in the cycle. We have just completed a very succesful (in terms of results) world cup qualifying group. These matches get a formula boost. The results from the 2006 World Cup (despite finishing in the top 16 the actual results for rankings were 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses) got discounted. South Korea actually got more ranking points from the World Cup than we did, despite being eliminated in the group stage. As Uefa teams finish their qualifiers they will get a similar boost (at least the teams that win will). In any case the rankings are only a guide and should be seen as such. There isn't a great deal of difference in the abilities of teams from 15-50 IMHO.
Whooooosh! It's the Old Septic Bladder and Michelle Platipuss who get together over a Chardonnay or two and decide who the seeds are going to be. They may even tweek them a bit, if the price is right. FIFA should be honest enough to say that's how they pick the seeds (ie it's simply a matter of THEIR opinion) and stop all the bullshit about a seeding methodology (after the fact). All that does is reinforce how big a bunch of spivs, shonks & just plain outright crooks they really are.
the likes of Israel, Bulgaria and Greece have been hovering around our current ranking for yonks now. Why wouldn't Australia? Of course the rankings mean NOTHING but it at least acknowledges that Australian footy is going forward
Btw why are Israel & Bulgaria so high in FIFA ranking? this is pure bs! Israel have been in WC once in "1970" and they are still top 25 (lolz) but teams like Turkey and Egypt still hold on in 40-25 And how on earth is Sweden 42? FIFA ranking = corrupt!
Isreal and Bulgaria perform quite well in qualifiers without qualifying much recently. That means they don't have poor performances in finals matches to bring down their ranking. Sweden usually qualify for major tournaments and then perform poorly. The poor results in finals matches bring them down. Not corrupt, just not perfrct.
August ranking relased today : 16 Australia - 39 Japan +1 48 Korea Rep - 61 Iran -3 64 Saudi Arabia -3 65 Bahrain +1 79 Uzbekistan - 80 Oman -2 85 Qatar +1 86 Korea DPR -3 95 Syria +1 100 Iraq -6 http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/r...fullranking.html#confederation=25998&rank=184
Worthless piece of shit! The FIFA rankning is a joke, but it have effect on the teams! Saudi Arabia,Bahrain,Uzbekistan,Oman,Qatar,Korea DPR,Syria??? Come on please! The only team in Asia that is hard against us is Japan or S.Korea Iraq 100? jinal abo FIFA
You do know that Bahrain and Saudi arabia are still on the the world Cup race? I agree though, FIFA ranking are absolute shit!!
The rankings are based entirely off of results against South American and European countries... and how long ago those results occured. If they had points from playing against a NT in July in previous years, those results were all reduced in points --> reduce in rank. That's one of the many reasons the rankings are a joke. It matters very much what month you compute the rankings for. A match worth 500 points one month might only be worth 250 the next.
No that is not the reason, actually DPR Korea got 3 more ranking points in August than in July , but dropped 3 places . El Salvador and Canada passed them thanks to good results in Gold Cup in July
I don't care much about the rank, but be sensible Iraqi bro! You reallz think that you win all matches against the teams you mentioned first?I suppose that's a joke. well 95 for us not the worst thing...
Maybe not against Uzbekistan, some how we strugle against them but the rest! yeah sure why not? and specialy syria, its a joke that Syria is ahead of us! I dont give a - about the rank, but it can damage a team badly! But on the other hand Iraq have played shit this year!
i think your the first australian i have come across that actually understands the intracacies and nuances of the ranking system and thereby the faults of it.
