Celestine Karoney - BBC Sport Africa journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live ‘ England's high line will be seen as a weakness. Senegal are looking at counter attacking, that is what they are looking to do. They will be thinking about doing long balls forwards, get your three front men, get Ismaila Sarr up there and hit him. You get one chance, you take it because they feel that is still their strongest point. Anyone who will be up front and get that diagonal pass, will get in there. Trust me, you have to believe in yourself. Game management is the thing I'm worried about for Senegal. When they have conceded the goals in the last three games, it was in the second half, past the hour mark so that fitness and fatigue means they will have to concentrate. The England forwards will run for 90 to 120 minutes if that's what it is but Senegal do not want to go to penalties, I can tell you this.’
Looks increasingly like Saka and Foden to start for #england tonight with Rashford and Sterling on the bench.— Rob Dorsett (@RobDorsettSky) December 4, 2022
I’m not concerned about the front 3. Any combination would be decent with the players at disposal. It’s the midfield that worries me
Pickford Walker Stones Maguire Shaw Bellingham Rice Henderson Saka Kane Foden Is near enough our strongest team available imo. Phillips in for Henderson only change.
Henderson who's never performed at this level. Rice is ok but a pure DM who won't do much on the ball. Bellingham who's not a 10 and couldn't perform in that position vs Wales. There's no creativity and no balance here. The defenders will have to bypass the midfield we've been there before. Actually, with that midfield trio, not sure Foden is the ideal player to play on the wing.
Rice does alot of penetrating runs. Haven't seen alot this tournament but he does it. Henderson will sit and play it simple. Bellingham is a 6 and an 8 rolled into one. Bellingham is a difference maker. We have no 'creative midfielders' per say. Personally I would have maddison in
Marcus Rashford set to be replaced by Bukayo Saka in #England team to face #Senegal tonight at Al-Bayt Stadium— Mike McGrath (@mcgrathmike) December 4, 2022 Bit surprised Southgate isn't riding Rashford's confidence and starting him
Bukayo Saka set to play ahead of Marcus Rashford. Phil Foden expected to keep place against Senegal.— Sami Mokbel (@SamiMokbel81_DM) December 4, 2022
Foden has ridiculous potentiel as an 8/10. But ok, he doesn't play there for his club so we won't see him with England. The main problem is the balance here. We've tried this type of midfield it never works. Even vs Wales, probably the weakest team of the tournament, this midfield struggled.
Besides Foden could do what Griezmann does for them, and much more, as he has a better long range pass and much more legs to get past players
It would mean we're leading. Don't see it what 11. The subs will be important. Another disapointment is to see Philips on the bench, looked excellent vs Wales.
