Meanwhile, between the new R32 and the semi-finals, an astonishing 14 matches featured a result-changing goal after the 85th minute!

That last stat, is it really surprising that 14 out of 103 matches so far had a key goal late on? A minimum of 3 minutes for hydration to add on plus substitutes, injuries and any VAR delays. I don't know what the average 2nd half stoppage time was but 7 minutes sounds right, which means 12 minutes after the 85 minute mark. A significant portion of the match. Not sure if the matches with extra time winners are included either.

 

Now comes the miracle questionable call to save Argentina.

I think you largely correct except that you conflate predictions and concerns; and also the impact of public protest regarding ICE before the tournament.

 

So 2030 will, I think, be the first time that the current World Champions are also a World Cup host.

 

Yes, a successful tournament just marred by Argentina's behaviour.

The tournament was more competitive than I expected given the expansion, although I feel we are at the absolute limit with 48 teams.

The stadiums were incredible!

The hydration breaks have to go though - I have a feeling FIFA will compromise and limit them to 90 seconds next time - together with the half-time show.

The treatment of Iran, the Somali referee and various others trying to enter the USA together with the Balogun scandal were a disgrace (obviously FIFA only responsible for the latter).

 

Incredible scenes in Madrid at the parade and party with thousands of people welcoming home the new world champions!

 

It's only preliminary because we have to await the report which FIFA will issue later this year, but yesterday FIFA referred to the global fan engagement - covering broadcast, streaming and digital - with this WC exceeding 6bn.

If confirmed, that would represent a 20%+ increase on the 5bn engaged with Qatar 2022.

 

15 billion in revenue reported and almost 9 billion in net revenue. Needless to say the most ever for any sporting event on the planet earth. The next one is already predicted to break these numbers.

Well I pretty much can guarantee it's the first time both the winner and loser will host since it starts in South America and ends in Europe.

• Ticket prices,
• Host cities lacked the usual 'WC vibe',

Next, unnecessary half-time show during the most important match of the tournament.

Substandard field conditions? Not sure what you were seeing. All the games i saw on TV and the 5 in person were absolutely world class pitches.

 

I'm all for expanding to 64 teams for 2030, provided that places are allocated based on World Rankings. UEFA would get 29 places

 

Add to the cons that residents of several African nations were banned from being able to attend the finals.
