~$95 is what I'm hoping to pick up a ticket for one of the "shithole country" games in Santa Clara... This is a fundamental problem with transit in the US in that many stadia are poorly served by it. So it requires special trains etc which inevitably cost more than "regular" transit.
🚨JUST IN: FIFA has banned tailgating before World Cup matches at major U.S. stadiums.Tailgates are normally free to attend.— Polymarket Sports (@PolymarketSport) April 14, 2026
Not surprising that FIFA wants to adapt to US culture when it comes to pricing tickets but not so much where it might impact their profits.
If I do go to a game, I am definitely tailgating. They will have to take my bratwurst from my cold dead hands! We fought for our independence 250 years so we wouldn’t have to buy licensed goods! No kings! The elected legislature only has the right to pass such a law!
The $85 train price tag derives from MBTA's $35M infrastructure upgrade of Foxboro train station. No FIFA entity will reimburse MBTA. NFL+MLS fans, primarily Patriot+Revolution fans, will reap public transportation benefits subsidized by fleeced WC fans. MBTA is licking its chops after passing infrastructure costs onto non-residents of Massachusetts. Taxation without representation after 250 years of independence.
Taxation without representation has been normal for visa holders and permanent residents for a long time.

I see you’ve never encountered the “tailgating police” at SoFi Stadium (bike cops who circle like vultures)
Bruhhhhhh.... Only in the US, no mention of Canadian or Mexican cities and transit companies ripping off fans. WOW
Yeah, but its only one of the multiple problems associated with getting to/from stadiums during the 2026 WC in particular. The mediocre, time-consuming public transportation option to get to Metlife in NJ will cost you over $100 instead of the usual $12.90 because the WC has been labelled a "special event".
I put this on a par with taxing airport car rentals (come in Phoenix etc) in order to help pay for local sports stadia. Nothing like sticking it to visitors. "American Exceptionalism".
That would be so, if they were giving a discount to locals. Locals have to figure out a way to get there, too, and they can't drive there even if they want to.
How will they check tickets anyways? In my experience the public transport people just want to get it done.
They won’t be able to check. Not without holding up the lines and creating a logistical mess. And putting in place significant infrastructure and manpower beyond what they currently have. Normally the Penn Station to Secaucus leg uses the “honor system”, where a conductor rarely comes through and scans tickets. It’s a 10 minute ride, so they usually don’t check. In Secaucus, you have to scan a valid ticket to exit the turnstiles and get to the platform that goes to the stadium. On gamedays, they usually just start letting people through if the lines are backing up. A lot of people tailgate their way through regardless.
For trains departing NYC Penn Station, people won't enter restricted NYC Penn Station areas reserved for match attendees. At $95 dollars a pop, NJTransit will likely have attendants verifying train tickets before any fan can access the underground platforms. Summer temperatures will make things interesting.
Megabus shuttle did not get a contract with FIFA to service WC matches at MetLife stadium. Same thing happened ahead of Super Bowl XLVIII in Feb 2014. NFL put up its own shuttle bus service then, above market price of course.
Panicked U.S. hotels are slashing room rates for the World Cup amid a demand shortfall, exacerbated by what executives believe is being driven by a surge in anti-American sentiment. https://t.co/52hSQIq6Hb— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast) April 15, 2026
I alluded to it last week. If Lucho is past his prime then I hope he plays like he is past his prime in June and July.
