Do you have a gov't source stating that quote? Just want to confirm whether a gov't statement was issued against fans of a FIFA-organized tournament.
Heading to opener tonight, then Metlife tomorrow. My group is not carrying any passport, no issues with leagal status here. Would be surprised and angry if we are profiled.
It’s just general guidance that the government offers to all visitors. Nothing to do with the tournament specifically.

Comparing apples to oranges there. CUW would be the first nation to qualify without members of its population playing WC qualifiers. An opposite of what ISL and BER have attempted so far. CUW called 30 players during 2026 WC qualifiers: - Only 3 were born/residents in Curacao (S.Carmelia, V.Anita, R.Rosario). - Only R.Rosario saw action in the current qualifiers. All CUW needed to qualify was keep its national population from playing qualifiers. Who knew?
I read it on nbc news miami website, advice clearly coming from the authorities. do not think it is against fans or fifa tournament, it is simply general warning and underlines what is happening america wide. some people and some media claim they are going too far, the others claim they are only reinforcing the law … no clue where the truth is, probably somewhere in the middle, as usual. let’s see how the tournament unwraps p.s. all much more CWC related than WC of course
How is this different to Germany? In Germany it's mandatory to carry i.d. If you're from outside the EU/EFTA/UK the only valid i.d. is a passport.
Media/individuals exploiting a worrisome state of affairs for the sake of clicks does not help. No statement was issued saying "CWC visitors should carry proof of their legal status". The advisory was made against *anyone* who could be subjected to an identity check. Sticking "CWC visitors" sure helps drive clicks, while not painting the bigger/more important picture.
Is it mandatory to show ID within German territory, though? I understand that you must identify at a German port of entry, but does German law demand all individuals must provide ID at all times? In the good ol' USA, our 4th constitutional amendment protects all individuals from having to show ID without reasonable suspicion of having committed a crime. Even when passing through a "stop-and-identify" US state, our 4th constitutional amendment protects that right. So, if a gov't agency wants to check IDs of profiled individuals just because *everyone should carry proof of legal status*, then that is worrisome: an individual is asked to comply with showing ID, even though that individual committed no crime. In my humble opinion, it is easy to intimidate a general population when they are not educated of their civil rights. Such tactics help reduce sympathy towards other human groups too, because *they* become the reason why *everyone should carry proof of legal status*.
The only mention of CWC visitors was in the NBC News Miami article, where they reached out to the CBP for comment and their spokesperson regurgitated the standard US government policy of “all visitors should be able to prove their legal status”. It’s important to note that CBP/ICE agents are authorized to ask for identity/visa documents anywhere within 60 miles of the border. And all oceans count as a border. But in practice, this has no impact on events or most visitors. Until I see ICE/CBP checking everyone’s documents on the way out of a stadium, this is all a non-story and won’t impact anyone’s visit to the US for the CWC or World Cup.
In Germany you need to be able to provide your i.d. upon request. I think that may mean you can go back to your hotel to pick it up. Belgium appears to be the strictest country in Western Europe. You are legally required to carry your passport at all times.
A quote from a friend concerning the future of international competitions being held in North America.
The domestic anti-Trump crowd is exploiting the high visibility of the CWC, World Cup, and Olympics to stoke drama and fear over perceived issues that won’t actually have any direct impact on any of those competitions. Essentially, the anti-Trump crowd wants tourists to stay away and these events to fail (or have the perception of failure) because their hatred of Trump’s administration overrides anything else they might care about. These events will all go off without issue and the US will remain a top candidate for any international sporting competition. Qatar had well-publicized human rights problems. Russia was involved in an active war in the Crimea. Brazil turned its military against its own citizens in the favelas during the years leading up to and during their World Cup. None of this mattered and in the end no one cared.
@miami, NYC games no sight or indication of any legal status checks. Hoping for same at Philly tonight.

Thank heavens one of them is barred from international football, for doing the same thing it did before hosting a WC. Not saying which one though
