More money can be made by two tournaments set up the way I am describing because in theory FIFA could sell to more Networks. For instance in the USA one of the 32 tournaments can be sold to ESPN and the other to FOX while in Spanish one can be sold to Univision and the other to Telemundo doubling the profits.
Not a bad idea for when we expand again but I would still stick to just one confederation hosting (maybe I would combine AFC/OFC and the two American confederations so we rotate between 4) and have cross over at either the quarter final or round of 16 stage.
With the filling of the calendar with nations league matches in Europe, long qualifying with no byes in AFC and Conmebol and Multiple CAF qualifiers for various tournaments it seems harder and harder for host teams to find good quality friendlies. From AFC 6 teams that qualify from round 3 will become available from September next year along with six who don't make round 4. Conmebol teams will be available from October next year. CAF has a pretty full schedule but I don't think they are using the June window for anything. Makes it very hard for the hosts to organise friendlies with potential World Cup quality teams until the second half of next year when teams that have qualified will probably be happy to play a game or two with the hosts as preparation.
thinking outside the box gave us world cups in qatar, usa and saudi arabia ... bad, worse and the worst so I'd prefer staying inside!
Maybe I am missing something, but seems like it would be (in theory, at least) double compared to a single 32-team tournament. Not double compared to a 64-team WC all played in the same global region (as the total number of matches and overall importance/prestige would be the same either way). But with 2 tournaments played in opposite ends of the Earth, you are just ensuring that half the games will be played at a very inconvenient time of the day (night) for the core of the TV audience.
On Twitter, many users have smeared the US for hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They've said the US doesn't deserve to host it because of many issues. I've a question: is the US deserve to host a FIFA World Cup ever ?
you aee absolutely right? who does favor a tournamenr where 1 team cannot play any of 50 percent the teams until the finals?
there were a lot of flaws. 1. dead rubber groups/matches (98 Japan-Jamaica, 06 Ivory Cost-Serbia-MNE, 06 Poland-Costa Rica) 2. teams already qualified fielding their substitue players 3. crossover round-of-16 matches of 4 contender from 2 groups (A1-B2, B1-A2) led to forseeable contenders in the knocl outs and thus often boring, tactical matches. 4. repetition of similiar groups and matches each world cup (will be less with 12 groups)
It could be joint like the NCAA Basketball tournament. CBS had exclusive rights. Now that it is expanded CBS shares it with Turner/TBS/TNT. My idea is kind of along those lines of the more Networks involved the more games can be covered and the bigger the monetary deals.
Still don't know what you’re talking about, Willis. This is already being done in many countries under the current 32-team format. It's not like they're paying double, they're just splitting the cost. And NCAA was always 6 rounds (at least during the period you’re talking about)
IT will be a little bit different but with more Networks and More games to sell you can get more money. IT is simple for you to understand Arnold.
no, and they are showing zero intention to tell us anything about it OK, matchup kickoff times will be assigned after the draw, that's fine, but they could at least share their plans with us (obviously there will be at least four different kickoff times, maybe even five). that is FIFA, they simply do not care.
apart from the whole idea being totally ridiculous, networks want exclusivity if they throw so much money on the table. it is the world cup, not some ridiculous MLB season where they try to hit the ball with the battledore and play zillion boring games not only about that
Networks care about filling up spots with live Television Sporting events. Not as much exclusivity if it is a tournament twice the size and at time slots that are not as advantageous for their time zones. They would not care as much about the ones on the other side of the World but could still profit off of it if they lose out on the bidding of the 32 bracket closer their markets. Having some of the World Cup is better than having none of it. More games means more chances to negotiate. Heck, even the streaming services can get a piece of the action and their own contracts.
So no one will qualify for the World Cup this next window but 2 teams can put themselves in line to join likely New Zealand in March. Japan is very likely if they have have another good window and Argentina as well. Iran and Colombia could join them as well if results go their way.
