The irony is that the guy saying "don't jump from suspicious events to sweeping conclusions" is apparently the one who needs a break, while the people connecting Negreira, AFA finances, FIFA, Messi, Argentina and Barcelona into one all-encompassing theory are considered perfectly measured.

There's nothing wrong with questioning refereeing decisions or discussing patterns. The problem starts when every separate controversy is treated as proof of every other controversy. That's confirmation bias, not evidence.

 

Argentina benfits from more wrong calls.

Again, you went off on a tangent like you always do. You never discuss whether a team benefits from something, you immediately switch to intention and the need for basically a written confession. You do not argue specific plays at all.

That's not what I said. I didn't say the governing bodies are unrelated or that they've "learned their lessons."

My point is much simpler: sharing the same institution doesn't mean one controversy becomes evidence for another.

Negreira should be judged on the evidence for Negreira. Allegations about AFA should be judged on the evidence for AFA. World Cup refereeing should be judged on the evidence for World Cup refereeing.

If the same governing body is involved, that can justify greater scrutiny. It doesn't eliminate the need to prove each claim on its own merits.

 

I'll bite, what "same governing bodies" are involved in both the Negreira situation and the AFA money laundering accusations?

And you keep insinuating the money laundering accusations might relate to referee decisions at the world cup, but everything I have seen indicates the money laundering accusations relate to embezzlement and tax evasion, but no accusations or reports involving payments to referees.

 

I don't disagree that FIFA's history justifies greater scrutiny. I've said exactly that.

Where we differ is what follows from that. A history of corruption increases suspicion; it doesn't make separate allegations evidentially interchangeable.

Otherwise every future allegation involving FIFA would automatically be treated as proven simply because FIFA has been corrupt before. That's not how evidence works.

If people have every right to believe FIFA manipulates results "whether justified or not," then that's their prerogative.

But why is someone saying, "Let's judge each allegation on its own evidence," the one who "needs a break"?

And "this isn't a legal forum" misses the point. I'm not asking for courtroom standards of proof. I'm saying one controversy doesn't automatically become evidence for another. FIFA's history justifies scrutiny, not treating every allegation as proven.

Either we're all free to hold our views, or we're not. Asking for consistency shouldn't be the controversial position.

Fair enough. I agree FIFA has done a poor job of restoring trust. My point wasn't that fans will always be consistent; it was that consistency is still a reasonable standard to aim for. Asking that each allegation be judged on its own merits shouldn't be the position that's treated as unreasonable.

 

I thought a draw within 90 minutes is considered a draw in international football.

 

Why would the teams rotate? They're going to vacation after this and acting like a medal is beneath them is hilarious.
