I really feel sorry for Pulisic. Don't know what he's like, but it's clearly a case of a huge audience that has no clue about the sport being told that this is somehow a great player and him having to live up to expectations he never set in the first place.
Pulisic is the poster boy for the US team because of his rapid rise in European football at a young age and playing for Chelsea and winning the CL. And saying stupid shit like “we can win the world cup” repeatedly since a teenager in every interview. fact is he soft mentally. Subbed himself out in the biggest game.
A game the team was getting their rear ends handed to them pillar to post. My experience with Pulisic is that he looked like a solid Perisic replacement at Dortmund. The fac that somebody thinks he's anywhere near the top of the sport shows more lack of knowledge about it than anything else. Think he's around as good as Marko Marin. Or somewhere around Schürrle at his best?
With the right players around him he can be solid. He’s average in many ways. I think your comparison is pretty accurate. Landon Donovan spoke on his podcast that an insider he knows who works with Pulisic said to him years ago that he didn’t have the mentality to be a big tin player. Talented but not strong mentality nor hungry.
Fascinating to hear Landon Donovan speak considering that hes basically failed or been mediocre anywhere he's been in Europe. He's the Lalas of his generation. I have no clue why he's talking down to people that have surpassed him.
Maybe, but he was a regular person in Germany. I suppose that is how the US wants their athletes marketed to them and he's sort of doing just that.
I think Donovan wasn’t nearly talented enough but worked his ass off to achieve what he did. Deep down I think he knew he wasn’t good enough to compete in Europe and chose to be the hero for MLS. Also he like Pulisic has that club soccer punchable face and attitude that turns many off.
"Fake" is probably not the right word to describe the FIFA rankings. The thing is, FIFA rankings are generally only referred to by Americans and maybe the odd Canadian. You'll have to watch a lot of football on ITV or Moviestar to see the rankings referred to even once. They are for the Alexei Lalas-type analysts. Before the WC started, there was general agreement in the world that Belgium's group was the weakest. Maybe Argentina has caught up with Belgium on the luck front with the first 2 KO matches, although that's debatable. But given that Belgium probably didn't warrant a top seed in the first place and won a group with just 5 points, I still say they've been the luckiest team up until now.
I think Donovan interpreted his position at Leverkusen as bias against him because he was American, not the truth he wasn’t talented enough. Many American players feel like they have to prove themselves even more so than other players since the world in general perceives Americans as shit at soccer.
You do realize the entire world cup draw and seeding pots are strictly based on those exact rankings, right? It’s not Alexi Lalas pulling ping pong balls out of a fishbowl on Fox. It’s literally how Infantino and FIFA decide who gets the VIP lane. Belgium tops the weakest group and gets rewarded by having to play the USA, who actually topped their own group n they actually handled business, stomping them convincingly. SO the fact that Belgium won a joke of a group with 5 points and still looked vastly more convincing in the round of 16 than Argentina did against the exact same tier of opposition is hilarious.
It's kind of fascinating to me because a kid that played for relatively big clubs in Germany is playing D1 in the US now and he's saying the level of players is absolutely comparable. I think Donovan kind of feels entitled by seniority and the fact that he kind of did certain things first but it's so much different now and seeing him pop up on the screen and talk down on everybody is so weird to me.
