What I am saying is with a 26 man squad, you can pick 2 conventional RBs and 2 conventions LB and one other to cover both positions. especially as James and cover Midfield and White CB.
The squad will be announced exclusively on the England app which will also be where Tuchel will speak live about it from Wembely Stadium.
GK: Pickford, Trafford, Henderson DEF: James, Spence, White, Guehi, Burn, Konsa, Stones, O’Reilly, Livramento MID: Rice, Henderson, Garner, Mainoo, Wharton, Bellingham, Rogers, Eze/Palmer FWD: Saka, Madueke, Kane, Watkins, Gordon, Rashford Barring any injuries this is what I think it'll be. Maybe Alex Scott goes instead of Garner or Wharton. Possibly Bowen over Madueke too. Largely though I think Tuchel's lack of forward thinking in the last 18 months will force his hand to side with familiarity rather than making any big calls. Maybe he takes both Eze and Palmer and drops someone like Wharton. I don't see him taking any fewer than 9 defenders though as he's mostly picked that in each squad. EDIT: Forgot Anderson. Midfield selections are going to be interesting (annoying) for sure. Some big names will miss out there.
Can't help but feel not taking Maguire would be lunacy Skybet Odds: Pickford 1/40 Henderson 1/9 Trafford 8/13 Ramsdale 5/4 Steele 11/2 Pope 6/1 O'Reilly 1/7 James 1/5 Hall 3/10 Livramento 4/7 Spence 5/6 Shaw Evs TAA 11/10 White 17/10 MLS 4/1 Lewis 8/1 Mitchell 10/1 Guehi 1/40 Konsa 1/14 Maguire 1/4 Stones 3/10 Burn 4/9 Tomori 4/6 Quansah 5/6 Chalobah 11/4 Colwill 11/1 Rice 1/33 Anderson 1/16 Henderson 4/11 Mainoo 8/15 Wharton 4/7 Garner 6/4 Gallagher 4/1 Jones 5/1 Scott 7/1 Saka 1/33 Rogers 1/20 Gordon 1/14 Bellingham 1/10 Palmer 1/9 Rashford 1/6 Eze 3/10 Foden 4/11 Madueke 4/9 Bowen 8/13 Gibbs-White 5/4 Kane 1/40 Watkins 8/15 Calvert-Lewin 21/10 Solanke 5/1 Welbeck 11/2 Toney 7/1
We pay attention to the numbers and pick a squad from this. Players like Anderson rank high in many stats. distance covered forward passes tackles won
I’m intrigued you think Hall won’t go. I’ve been saying it for a while but a lot of people are still expecting it.
Wayne Rooney was talking about the squad on his podcast. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cn7pv5nrvglo
Just a hunch. We know Tuchel prioritises off-ball work and Spence and Livramento have both played more minutes for England under him. I think Hall losing his Newcastle place might be the nail in the coffin for him.
I agree but moat fans and the media haven’t yet. The BBC article I posted says O’Reilly and Hall are the front runners to start with the obvious assumption both will be taken,
With respect, it's not that most fans don't realise, its simply some of these decisions are literally a toss of a coin.
I can’t see Burn going anymore. You can make a weird ‘good for the camp’ type argument for his inclusion but for that to happen Stones has to have had a much more reliable season. I think it has been pretty evident that Tuchel doesn’t trust Burn in games against decent opponents. If Guehi or Konsa take a knock there is no way we can expect Stones to play out a tournament as a starter.
That is a risk Tuchel should not take but who knows. But going by what he has said If Stones is fit he might even start him ahead of Konsa or Guehi.
Stones could start. He could play every game and be fine but his fitness record means his selection is a luxury. That must be compensated by picking other CB’s that are trusted to start games.
Very nuch so. His fitness has always luckily lasted during international tournaments but it’s a hell of risk when he seems to be able to get injured so easily.
I would personally take Maguire since his fitness issues seem fine these days and seems to be playing well for Utd plus just offers us that aerial ability that others ( apart from Burn ) don’t plus is a great weapon from set pieces. Also a good cheerleader around the camp which Tuchel seems to crave.
The England pod have mentioned its a 26 man squad announcement not a provisionary squad. So it looks like his squad for the World Cup
I don't get the White hype. He was mediocre against Japan and only came in as Quansah was injured. Has Quansah actually dropped out of the conversation. He was in many squads, played 90 against Albania, does the CB/RB that Tuchel loves. Since Serbia away Livramento has played minutes in every game he wasn't injured. Seems to be first choice backup to James.
The timing doesn’t really allow a provisional squad. The deadline is two days after the CL final. No time for a proper camp if you want players to have a rest. Late major injures can be replaced through
I think it'll be madness if Shaw doesn't go . Covers leftback and Left CB. Probably played the most minutes of any English leftback in the league.
Starting to actually think we should maybe take a punt on Rio if we can have a wild card to pick, who is just a handful plus it’s an area of the pitch we haven’t got to much quality.
Apart from a few exceptions (Welbeck etc) you can pretty much only pick players he’s called up previously. Meaning it is impossible to pick the correct 26 if he calls a new option up. Probably just a competition that has not been thought through.
