now that the US lost its world cup bid, we dont have to worry about kissing FIFA's butt on this non-issue for at least another 12 years.....

FIFA doesn't need US as much as US needs FIFA.

Yeah it did reek of buttkiss to talk of fall/spring sched at a point of development where the league doesn't even respect all international breaks and tournaments. If we get that I'll consider it a victory that could stay.

yep - color me in the camp of screw FIFA now. There is no reason to adhere to any of their demands beyond what is required to stay accredited.

Doesn't mean that the US is going to listen to FIFA's "recommendations"

Indeed. I wonder what happens now to those "studies" Garber talked about regarding aligning with the fall/spring schedule. Go to hell Blatter and FiFA.

    This.

    Rep coming your way.

Much has been made about all the money that can be made in the USA and how FIFA NEEDS the USA. The reality is FIFA can make a lot of money in a lot of places now, Russia, China, Qatar not to mention, Korea, Japan, Australia etc.

The USA is no longer the only cash cow for FIFA. The world economy has changed and the USA may no longer even be at the top of the financial world by 2026 if chickens come home to roost.

The cold hard fact remains: The USA needs to either host or win a World Cup to push the sport to the next level in this country.

The only changes they will make now will be those that increase their revenues in North America. Aligning with FIFA for FIFA's sake is dead.

I am sure that was the reason and not the millions of dollars in private swiss bank accounts that they got the bid.

Hmmm . . disagree based on the percentage of American based companies that provide the sponsorship money - but neither here nor there. If FIFA doesn't reciprocate with the World Cup, no reason to worry about them beyond what is required. I agree the WC would have boosted the sport here, but we didn't get it so now we move on and have to do things are own way. The carrot is gone.

So is it ok to ask a mod to close this thread now that the bid hype is over?

most likely 8 years and to be frank that is only if we bid. By 2026 Canada and or Mexico may want in the mix for a CONCACAF bid. I doubt we are going o make any changes based on the 2026 world cup possibility after this debacle.

oh, if they were really pressuring us, I am sure they did link them. Go back (couple of books on the subject) and look at the requirements placed on us for the 1994 Cup.

That's what I'm saying, so this thread is not directly related to the World Cup.

Maybe FIFA will really pressuring us next time. I hope.

Well the World Cup after Quatar will be 2026.
The announcement might be around 2020-2022

If bidding, need to start paying attention as early as 2016-2017

    That's not too distant future.

All we need from FIFA for the foreseeable future it for them to not ban us from the sport. That's it- with this farce of a WC selection, there's nothing more FIFA can do for us.

So, we go back to running MLS how we want to, and not giving a crap about FIFA, other than the bare minimum required to keep us in good standing.

How about we don't bother with this farcical WC bidding process anymore. Everyone else can have it for all I care.

Unless they decide to announce two more again in four or eight years, it is unlikely anyway will pay attention until 2019 for a 2020-2022 announcement but who knows. Bottom line is who cares. In 7-10 years the league will develop the way the owners here want it to develop: making it harder to adhere to any FIFA requests. And to be frank, I am not sure we bid again without the full support of CONCACAF which we may not have if Canada or Mexico want in the mix.

Agreed. Why bother jumping through FIFA's hoops if the selection process is going to be such a joke?
