Yes, also with the expanded Club WC occupying the summer before each men's WC, there is no longer the space to have biennial Copa Americas. Presumably Conmebol switched the Copa America to be held alongside the EURO in order to pave the way for the expanded Club WC which should prove to be very popular in South America.
On the contrary, the final two Champions and Europa MDs in January will carry significant stakes; indeed, all 18 games on MD8 in each competition will be played simultaneously so they will be extremely dramatic.
Alot going on at once, you can argue. But I expect all the favorites to have comfortably secured a top 8 place before MD 8. And even if they haven't, a team like Liverpool should be able to beat Shahktar Donetsk or whoever without Mo Salah anyway. It's a bigger deal that he misses EPL games
Looks like the 2025 AFCON will remain in summer: https://www.africanews.com/2024/02/20/afcon-2025-to-be-scheduled-forjuly-august-2025-in-morocco/ But it will be played after the CWC. Fine by me, but those players who play the CWC need to be given dispensation from the AFCON.
FIFA Series international friendlies pilot project to commence in March 2024: https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/org...dlies-pilot-project-to-commence-in-march-2024
Of course, there is no chance for a FIFA event going without Saudi Arabia. Even without Saudi actually taking part! Vanuatu vs Bermuda in Jeddah, yaaay! Good idea, though.
Um not sure where this should go, maybe we should have a sub-forum folder within this forum on youth cups or do we already have one somewhere? Qatar, Morocco to host FIFA U-17 World Cups for next five years | The Peninsula Qatar Anyway I guess it's kinda cool for anyone living in either Morocco, or of course Qatar
Not yet, although it's not a bad idea... This is going to cause considerable financial strain for smaller federations sending their youth NTs to annual continental qualifying competitions... then again, Infantino's probably looking at them like, "What did you think all those FIFA grants were for?"
The low income ones - about 115 - get an additional $1.2m per cycle exclusively to cover NT costs, which I think should increase to at least $2m in the next cycle to be able to exploit the advantage of annual U17WCs with more qualification opportunities. Considering the U17WC is usually held between October and December, Qatar seems a sensibile choice.
Could FA ban teams from playing postseason friendlies abroad? https://worldsoccertalk.com/amp/news/could-fa-ban-teams-from-playing-postseason-friendlies-abroad/ Some domestic self-regulation would certainly be welcome when it comes to player strain. At least exclude the Euro/Copa players?
CAF set to postpone AFCON 2025 to January 2026: https://sportsworldghana.com/caf-set-to-postpone-afcon-2025-to-january-2026/
Is the AFCON ever played in the year that it's supposed to? As if there weren't already enough reasons to hold this tournament (and those similar to it) once every four years, when the confederation benefitting financially by having it played twice per WC-cycle can't even find a good time to schedule it, then you really know its time to play it less often.
The most recent edition made BY FAR the largest profits for CAF ever. Not going to be every 4 years, nor should it be. The problem isn't CAF the problem is FIFA creating useless expanded world club competitions, which now conflicts with afcon, after CAF agreed to move it to the summer to accommodate European clubs.
Not sure. It wad stated they made 80 million US dollars, compared to previous averages of around 4 million. They said viewership was over 2 billion. That's a crazy increase and those thinking AFCON will be only every 4 years are living a pipe dream.
The FIFA Arab Cup is back: https://www.beinsports.com/en-mena/...o/fifa-arab-cup-to-return-to-qatar-2024-05-15 Much like in 2021, it won’t be on the international match calendar.
