You know, I'm not one of these people who hyperventilates about the evils of artificial turf, but c'mon. Unless there's some sort of compelling reason to install turf, I think that the South Africa 2010 organizers can stick with grass for one month for THE BIGGEST FRIGGIN' SPORTING EVENT ON EARTH.

Before and after, they can have whatever surface they like, but playing the World Cup on turf sounds more like a "because we can" situation more than a "because we have to" situation. And that's usually a pretty crummy reason to do anything.

    Completely agree!

Grass for WC, than do w.e you want. It's not like it's in Siberia where the grass has no chance of growing, it's in South Africa. Yes it may be hot, but I think they can water the grass for a month.

Actually, it'll be in early winter, since it's in the Southern Hemisphere.

I am convinced this guy is just on a mission to piss off the entire footballing world.

    FIFA hates soccer.

And he was complaining about how the grass was too long.

They have machines called lawn mowers to handle that. And if SA can't afford them, then move the WC.

Does the grass have to be from that country? Is there a specific domestic quota?

They can get the funds to add hundreds of miles to their transportation infrasructure, but they can't figure out how to pay for grass?

I realize that MLS N&A isn't the place for this, but there is nothing that indicates South Africa is up to the colossal task of hosting this World Cup.

UEFA's putting grass in Siberia (Moscow, to be exact) for this year's Champs League final...

Moscow is not in Siberia...Siberia is where my family would of been sent if they didn't choose to come here.

Plus, Moscow in late May (the CL Final) is quite lovely (if you don't mind the shootings and the muggings).

This post echoes the words of the South African girl who I had lunch with today.

She seemed to be convinced that there was no way her country could handle the transportation needs required to host the WC.

I am one of those people who hyperventilate with the mention of plastic grass. It has no place in soccer, EVER! Field Turf is plastic. It should never be allowed, especially in WC play. What a joke! What Blatter is full of, is piss!:p

as Brian Glanville (I think) said, Sepp Blatter has "50 ideas a day, 51 of them are bad"...

This would absolutely suck bizalls! I know we use it around MLS, but I think it's a terrible thing about MLS. This will mean strange bounces, odd outcomes, and injuries. Nothing good will come out of this. Nothing.

BTW, I love the Jade quote about Steve Martin. I know who Jade is, but who is Steve Martin? That's too funny, and comparing Steve Martin to Mencia is too good.

Well, not really. MLB has pretty much rejected turf at this point and is moving heavily towards grass (except for the few remaining indoor stadiums)

Tampa Bay, Minnesota, and Toronto are the only ones left with artificial turf.

At least dress the grass in hot pants so everybody can look at its long blades.

SA is the wrong place for the WC. The US of A is the right place. Turf is a terrible idea. The WC needs grass (insert marginally funny marijuana response here). I hate this idea. I hate that the United States seem decades away from another world cup. Color me pissed off, with a touch of field turf!

Blatter once suggested that they should find a way to have a winner in every game of football.

    MLS used to do that.

Blatter is suggesting that artificial turf is OK.

    MLS has artificial turf.

I think Sepp Blatter is setting up for gaining U.S. citizenship.
