Keeping a side eye on Argentina versus Mexico................ 2-2 deep into the second half! We know that Argentina will crush Mexico's dreams in the most heart-wrenching manner. Its just a matter of time. Canada down 1-0 to Ireland in the second half.
If we advance today, we get the tougher of potential CAF opponents. U17 Cup of Nations Runner Up Mali. Their performance in qualifying and in the U17 WC: CAF Qualifying: 2-1 over Angola 2-0 over Central African Republic 2-4 loss to Ivory Coast 1-1 QF Penalty win over Tunisia 2-0 SF Win over Burkina Faso 0-0 Final Lost to Morocco on Penalties (apparently a better version of Morocco) At the U17 WC: 3-0 over New Zealand 0-3 loss to Austria 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia 3-1 win over Zambia (who nearly beat Brazil in the group stage). So no idea what Mali is, lol, if we win today.
Argentina 2-2 Mexico full time ... and direct to PKs (no extra time). Edit Mexico wins 5-4 on PKs! This opens up the top half of the bracket. Let's take advantage ... Go USA! Argentina dominated the first half but only led 1-0. Mexico went ahead in the second half, and Argentina drew level very late (87').
Good for Canada, from their posters, it's sounded like they've had a thread bare, bubble gum and rubber bands based youth programs forever, so to make a run to the R16's is pretty cool.
US would've been through to the next round, if not for a poorly taken PK by Albert in the 59th minute.
Went to my second round of games today. Here are the highlights. Didn't get to see any of Portugal v Mexico nor.. oddly enough, England v Austria. The latter was played on one of the farthest pitches and we could see they were a couple of goals down and a man down as well. There's a pretty cool shot at 03:22 where I manage to get two goals from two different games as we are simultaneously watching Morocco v Mali from the top stand of Japan v North Korea...
For anyone trying to get tickets to the Monday semifinal BRAvPOR, just keep trying. It took me about 90 minutes on the ticketing site (they were unavailable, then available, then only singles available, etc. plus a number of tech glitches) but I was finally able to grab some. (I'll if I can insinuate myself into one of the crowd reaction shots in glennaldo_sf's YouTube highlight videos! )
Can always just buy the day pass and watch from the hill behind pitch 7. More comfortable imo and can move around as much as you please .
Odd to see the Golden Boot trophy go to an Austrian midfielder who plays for a club in their second division.
Interesting but I believe Liefering is actually Red Bull Salzburg's reserve team so maybe he's still actually a Red Bull player? Anyway here's highlights from the final: Kinda surprised to see Czech Republic get the Fair Play Award after their coach had the ref "czech" VAR in the dying seconds of our match to get a player sent off. There was some "USMNT representation" at the final. It's a bit of a stretch, out former USMNT 1994 manager Bora Milutinovic was their to help hand out the winner medals. The tournament mascot Boma, a desert owl, is meant to be a tribute to Bora, who has been residing and working behind the scenes in Qatar for some time now.
