So EA's now got a franchise mode and online capability. The question remains... have they done anything about the arcadey gameplay?

I think no one tells them the truth or something. We all know EA can do graphics, and they can do music.

Has anyone ever actually said to them, "Don't try to do anything on your own, kids. Just copy Konami's gameplay as close as legally possible and then add your signature eye pablum, and you'll have the total package"? They can't possibly be this stupid. Either they know they have a kiddie game, and don't care, or Konami has patented their gameplay engine in such a way that EA can't approach it.

Someone start a pool to guess when the first FIFA fanboy will come along defending that crap.

BTW- it's interesting that Codemasters has the logos on their kits.

What's the difference between Winning Eleven and the FIFA series? I own FIFA 2002 and FIFA 2003. 2002 was ridiculously easy and definitely played like an arcade game while 2003 got harder, but still seemed rather arcadish. Plus the new freestyle control absolutely sucked.

Good to see that they brought back player editing which was absent from 2003. I dunno, 2003 just seemed mediocre even though the graphics were brilliant.

I always end up playing Extratime 2002 instead of FIFA 2003. Now that FIFA has a franchise mode though I'll have to give it another shot.

PUT OUT WINNING ELEVEN ON XBOX!!

Read some of the posts about this topic. I used to love Fifa 2003. The gameplay was decent, I thought. Then I got WE6 and haven't even taken Fifa 2003 or Fifa 2002 WC out of the box. They're just a joke compared to WE6.

i would love to explain you with lines of words but i'm gonna just say this to you. play it and compare it with fifa by yourself. no argument will be needed between them once you played it.

if EA changes a few things they will have a good game on thier hands.

    1) the speed of the ball needs to be slowed down considerably. No more 50 yard thru balls on the ground at 100 mph.

    2) completely rework the defense. it was almost as if there was no way to defende. it was a joke.

    3) rework the aireal game, make 50/50 balls truly 50/50...in 2003 the computer won 90% of the balls in the air.

    4) make the goals less arbitrary. In WE6 and MLS extratime 2002 you knew exactly how and why you scored goals. in FIFA 2003 it seemed pretty random when the goals went in.

if they change those 4 things we might havequite a game in FIFA 2004....but I'm not holding my breathe. I was really disappointed with FIFA 2003 when I first got it but now I think it's decent for $29.99 but it's not worth $49.99

lastly, if they are gonna continue to use the freestyle controls, make it actually workable this time. It was kinda a mess in FIFA 2003.

but they should also go back and add these things to FIFA:

    1) in 2001 they had promotion and relegation. Add it again.

    2) in 2000 you could set up your own plays and defenses on set plays and corner kicks. bring this back.

    3) bring back the arrows where you could bend it like beckham on free kicks like they had in the past.

    4) I wouldn't mind a special button exclusively for overhead kicks like in 2001.

One thing people have to remember is that WE6 isn't available on PC so it's basically FIFA or jack for PC users. Now a lot of smart guys say "buy a console" but unless they're also volunteering to buy the thing for us, I find that pretty useless advice.

I think that FIFA 2003 could have been the best in the series but had some major flaws:

I thought FIFA World Cup 2002 was better than FIFA 2003, but it had the main problem of having too steep of a jump between the Amateur and professional level (use Israel against the World Stars in Amateur and win 10-0, use the World Stars against Israel in professional and lose 1-0), and the computer's attacks were too one-dimensional 70 yard high balls always right on the money to a waiting forward. Whether it was more realistic or not, it was more "fun" (FIFA 2003 is not fun. It's a chore. I never imagined I could be winning a game 8-0 on World Class level and be unthinkably frustrated at the game play), since it was less "scripted."

Ah, didn't know you were using a PC. With the prices of PS2's going down, despite what you say, I say to try and acquire one if you really are seeking satisfaction ina soccer game.

Unlike in Fifa, where I would be constantly frustrated at the things they put into the game to make it harder that basically just made the computer's Jeff Agoos outrun your Micheal Owen, in WE6 the only frustrating thing is the lack of cards and *sometimes* the missed calls. It's definitely more fun to play than annoying like Fifa can be.

I still don't see why they won't include the Argentinian league in the game. Oh well.

The EA news release said that in franchise mode you can take a lower division team and get it promoted. Does this mean there will be real lower divisions to play with? If so, that would be sweet!

Here's a few things I think FIFA 2004 needs to bring back:
    *creation centre obviously
*the international selection feature from RTWC98, you could select who was on the national teams from a large player pool
    *better through balls, headers, etc.
*all the national teams, or at least more of them, give me Holland, Canada, New Zealand, etc.

And people, can we please have a thread about soccer video games without arguing the merits of the FIFA series vs. Winning Eleven? Stick to the task at hand, this gets so darn boring and repetitive.

I know some will definitely like the fact that the game will feature teams from the "Americas Club Championship" I am guessing that means we will see teams like Boca, River, Olimpia, Pumas, etc. on this next one.

I, for one, hope they will add Fenerbahce and Bekskitas from Turkey...they are obviously high quality sides in their league, yet only Gala is included. I am a big fan of the real stadiums though, and I will be very happy if that expands by about 30 or so stadiums.

FIFA 2001 was the best of the FIFA series. I bought 2003 expecting it to be an improved version of 2001, and found myself playing 2001 that very day. 2003 sucked bigtime, and yet it was still 10 bucks more than WE6, which ive played everyday since purchasing. I think EA should just go back to the 2001 engine, because that game was incredible. Unfortunately, 2004 will probably be just as shitt.y as 2003, as it looks completely identical. Hopefully WE7 comes out soon, and with full FIFA liscensing. Could you imagine a winning eleven with as many teams as the fifa games?

RTWC '98 was the best FIFA game ever, IMO. Lots of teams, WC qualifying, GREAT cut scenes... Sure, the graphics would be outdated now, but it had the best creation center until WTS 2002. I even thought the gameplay was superior to later versions of FIFA. I could be wrong about this, tho- my game was for the N64, and haven't played it in four years.

I apologize for my part in that, even tho I wasn't the first, but you have to understand and expect some of it.

Look, everybody knows EA has better graphics, better music, better commentary and more teams/tournaments than any other game developer out there. It's not like they have any real competition in those areas, so improvements there just don't mean all that much.

If the team/player/stadium licenses were available to all the developers, no serious gamers would care what EA did, because we could get the total package (graphics, gameplay, and sound) somewhere else. But because the licenses belong to EA exclusively, we keep hoping against hope that they get the gameplay right. It's perfectly natural for us real gamers to be upset with EA for continuing to fail miserably in that area. It's fine for EA to cater to younger, arcade-level gamers, but releasing a Mario-style product while keeping the licenses away from developers who are committed to making a sim is irritating. Hope this helps.
