According to NY Newsday, nobody's going now.

Amazing how these things seem to fall apart so easily. Is Randall's Island available? How about Liberty State Park?

Statement from Andrew Dreskin, executive producer of the Field Day Music Festival, Calverton, LI, NY

"We are moving ahead with efforts to keep the Field Day Music Festival on track. This notice of denial was premature and we are continuing to work closely with the Town of Riverhead and Riverhead Police with ongoing meetings scheduled for this evening.

"Obviously we are disappointed by this decision but it appears to be based more on procedural issues than substantive problems. We believe we can resolve this issue quickly so that we can stage a festival that benefits the town, the county and a world wide audience that seeks to come to Calverton."

    rome, ny, here we come!

i don't know the first thing about planning an event of this magnitude, but it seems strange to me that these types of issues still aren't worked out 10 days before the show.

    Another update from Newsday:

    http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/ny-lirock0603,0,5914491.story?coll=ny-top-headlines

So it looks like everyone should know what the hell's going on by 3pm Wednesday. And the health comissioner sounds like he ain't about to change his mind.

Anyway, if this concert actually happens, I'll have an extra ticket to sell for Saturday only at face value. ($65 plus whatever service charge). PM me if you're interested. Obvioiusly I won't sell it until its certain the concert is happening.

Another major setback for the promoters tonight as the Riverhead Town Board refused to give them the permits to go forward, saying that they haven't hired the necessary 200 police officers:

    http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/ny-lirock0604,0,6045564.story?coll=ny-top-headlines

There is some cynical speculation on RH site At Ease that the residents & businesses in Suffolk have deliberately dragged this out so that (a) it's cancelled, but (b) not before the typical Hamptons 72-hour hotel room cancellation period has passed, thus forcing people to pay exorbitant summer rates for rooms that they won't need.

Regardless of what happens, I'm just relieved that I didn't buy tickets for this fiasco. Even if they move to Giants Stadium (which has been the primary speculation - but how is that exactly a "Field"? And where do people get to camp?), I wouldn't trust these promoters to be able to transport the bands safely to the stage.

Let's say it did come off after all. I just remembered that Saturday, you'd have

    a) the usual Hamptons crowd, maybe a little less than usual because the summer's off to a slow start, out east

    b) Field Day peoples in that general vicinity too

    c) and at the other end of the island, a Belmont crowd that could easily reach 120-130k, all there to see if Funny Cide - a New York horse - can win the Triple Crown for the first time in a quarter century.

Good gracious. Hope everyone involved - not just the Field Day peeps - have got tents, because you all might not get off of Long Island before Rosh Hashanah.

What a mess. As of this morning (Wednesday), the show was still not approved.

Since these acts were all booked for guaranteed fees, there will be few complaints by the bands if this show doesn't happen...but for a couple of acts, this show was an important part of their media campaigns, most notably Radiohead. Should make for some interesting last minute guerilla PR stuff to happen instead of the concert in NYC.

After these last 10 days of rain out here, those fields must be total swampland anyway by now...

I just heard that the bands have been told the show is off, so I guess it's official. The band contracts were very specific about the festival site, so even if an alternate site is found, the bands are not legally bound to play anywhere else.

I assume there will be a nasty press conference shortly.

How the hell did things get sour ?

Seems to me the town of Riverhead wanted to stage such an event but Suffolk County has its own concerns. Along with the promoters, the three parties were certainly not in full agreement.

But whatever lead to this fiasco, why on earth did the promoters publicize the event when all the necessary approvals weren't in place ??

To say it's a complete disaster is an understatement...

latest update as of 12:30pm Wed.:

    http://www.newsday.com/news/local/l...04,0,6045564.story?coll=ny-top-span-headlines

They're looking at Giants Stadium as an alternate site, which raises the questions:

    1) how do you fit general admission crowd into a place like GS?
    2) how do you arrange transportation to a site two rivers and two hours away from the original site for 50,000 people?
    3) how do you build two huge stages in two days?
    4) how do you change hotel reservations for tens of thousands of people (remember, there's no camping now)?
    5) how could the promoters have ***************ed this thing up so royally?

    ...and many, many others.

All this, plus what Footix said, means this is dead, dead, dead.

The promoters deserve to lose millions of dolalrs on this, I have no sympathy for them. They have been completely incompetent and moreover, irresponsible in allowing people to think this was going to still happen. They should have cancelled it last week.

I got 4 tickets! What do you think the chances are I'll see a refund before Christmas? Argh.

Sorry to break this news to you, but the refund will only be partial, 'cause Ticketshyster will not reimburse the "processing and royalty" fees.

Think of all the people who are travelling from afar.
The airline tickets and gasoline money will NOT be reimbursed, that's for sure.

This is a disgrace and a severe blow to the independent music scene, in general.

BTW, who are these promoters ??

Update: Giants Stadium is on for one day - Saturday only. Tickets on sale at 5 pm today (Wed). Radiohead and Beasties co-headline; rest of the bill announced at 3 pm.

    TicketMobster event link

Here's where the train wreck gets a little worse: Calverton tickets will NOT be honored. So no two-day, no camping, no transportation, and good luck getting refunds for your Calverton tickets.

TicketBastard is telling people that their credit cards will be refunded for the purchase price of the tickets. That probably means no service charges refunded, and at $10 a ticket that's a nasty pill to swallow for most.

Sad thing is, if I had the day free I'd buy tickets for Giants Stadium, provided that they combined the two days' acts well (RH, Interpol, Spiritualized). All will be revealed in an hour...

Looks like we might have the lineup for the Saturday-only show:

    Radiohead
    Beastie Boys
    Beck
    Blur
    Underworld
    Spiritualized
    Elliott Smith
    Liz Phair
    Bright Eyes
    Gemma Hayes
    22-20s

    More to be announced...

So all's not lost, after all.

Cramming approx 50k people (that is, if all 50k as orig. predicted) into Giants stadium...hmmm.

Still, it's probably better than the soggy soils at Calverton, from all the non-stop rain.

I'm *not* buying my tix until I get there...

That's $92 each, including service charges. Plus you get the added ambiance of Giants Stadium and NJSEA security! What a load of crap.

They should have just cancelled the entire thing, but no, there's some more money to be squeezed out of us suckers.

There will be 50,000+ angry pissed off people at this show. I think i'll wait til august and see if Radiohead play Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal again...

I know the promoters really fu@ked this up big time, but it's the second best thing, really. Look at it as a "save-face" stunt.
With all the acts already lined up, best thing to do is to re-locate. I'm astonished that this was even possible.
