Marca reports Real Madrid are interested int this guy from Boca. They rate him as the new Guardiola.

Can you expand the info a bit? I gather he's a good passer, but is he a good defender? And phisically, is he a strong guy, fast? Will he adapt well to European football?

    Gracias.

According to www.ole.com.ar Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on Sergio Aguero.

The article states that RM want to have first option to buy Gago in 2007.

His characteristics are similar to Redondo's, good passing and ball distribution, decent tackler (he ain't a Mascherano kinda DM) ... perhaps this comparison will help you: Gago is to Redondo as Mascherano is to Simeone.

But Gago hasn't completed his physical evolution yet. He is 1.77 mt and weights around 65 kg (this during the YWC - so probably he gained a bit of weight with all the titles he won since then :D )

Gago is one of the most promising talents out of Argentina in the past couple years ... and will most likely be a given for 2010, even thou he is still hoping to make it to WC06.

    Re: Gago

Well, Redondo wasn't a tackler, but he really was a dominant defensive force in midfield, great in the air. It seems he would have trouble adapting right now.

I will take a reborn Redondo anytime.

So would a Fabregas-Gago midfield in the future make sense for Real Madrid?

The Guti-Gravesen combo can't last forever. They are both 29 I think.

Out of interest, how respected is Diario Ole as a football news source in Argentina, In other words if they say Madrid are close to Gago, how likely is it to be true.

Gago is going to be great.. He still has alot to learn especially when covering the area's he leaves open when he goes forward..He is still lacking tactically. Hopefully he will become another Redondo.

Moving away from discussing the state of the NT, can anyone closer to the action give me an asessment of Fernando Gago, again another young Argentine who as been getting rave reviews and, inevitably getting linked with the likes of Real Madrid/Barca etc, is he the real deal?

World Soccer had a small profile on Gago in the January 2006 issue. Most of everyone on here is pretty in line with the article. I've luckily seen most of the games he appears in. Defensively he is getting more aggressive and I believe within two seasons he'll be proven.

estadisticas no mienten.... Gago is number ONE recovery man in argentine futbol today ( the one that takes the ball from the other team in constant basis and more frequently)

In interview yesterday with Niembro...he claims no contact with real Madrid for a possible move

    Re: Fernando Gago

Gago is a super talent that moves effortlessly about the back of the midfeild and does a great clean up job. He can also spring into the attacking third with good pace and dribble quite well as well. My only faults I have on him right now are his lack of strength, he can loose focus if a game bores him, his vision in providing from the mid needs to improve too, but the potential to even take Mascherano's spot someday is there;)

when it comes to mascherano's backup in germany, this is the kid i would go with. i know the odds of him going over demichelis is slim but the talent is there and the future is bright and tbh i never was a huge fan of demichelis. maybe because i haven't seen to much of him but when comparing the 2 imo, i feel gago is the better player. i know gago's a little to raw right now but you never know what could happen. his time to blossom may come sooner than we all think. but like i said he probably won't go and i won't be all bent out of shape seeing demechelis go either.

    Re: Fernando Gago

Thing is do we really want so many newbies out there?? At least Demi has some time in Europe.... Germany of all places:) ,, give Gago 4 years and then we will still have Messi, Ponzio, Zabaleta, Aguero, Palacio, Milito, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Ustari, Insua, no worries eh??

    Re: Fernando Gago

your right, i should have said gago WILL be better than demi one day. and to many newbies can come back to bite you in the ass. but like i said, i wouldn't be all bent out of shape seeing demi go(its probably the right move) i know gago is still a little raw with no experiance but i guess sometimes i get more excited about 2010 with all the talent coming up and sometimes think everyone is ready to go.

but i will stand strong about aguero going.

    Re: Fernando Gago

    Gago is a star.

In this tournament, Gago played 15 games for Boca ... 11 wins and 4 ties. He is the real balance for the team ... the start up of all ball possesion. And the best DM in the league. Prior to his return from injury, he missed in the 2 games that Boca lost ... coincidence?

Gago will be the natural replacement for Cambiasso in the NT ... playing along the DM as a double 5.

Another player that looks good, despite a weak game last nite, is Velez's Leandro Somoza. With this trio, Mascherano, Gago and Somoza, Argentina's NT has their future DMs.

    Re: Fernando Gago.

I searched youtube and only found one, playing for the U-20 NT against Brazil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBTOuk4n7wo

The Italians in the video are analyzing his movements.

Now, at that U-20 team, Gago played further up the pitch than at Boca, where he is the DM. Also, Gago has never scored for Boca yet, even thou he came close a few times.

Some of the debate these days in Argentina is if Gago and/or Mascherano. Some argue Gago shouldn't play in a double DM position, but as the sole DM. This would move Mascherano to the right ... kinda the role that Battaglia plays at Boca. La Red radio interviewed several "historic" DMs of the NT earlier this week, asking them the Gago/Mascherano. Most thought that they shouldn't play together as it limits Gago's movement ... opting for the Mascherano on the right.

I would like to see Gago playing the "Cambiasso" role and leave Masche on the hole in front of the central defenders. Kinda how Pirlo also plays at Milan or the Italian NT. We'll see how Basile uses him, as Gago wll surely be called for the NT. But for the game against Brazil on Sept 12, Basile will call ALL European based players.

Gago reminds me of Redondo, who was his idol when growing up. Important commentarists in Argentina, as Fernando Niembro, consider Gago the player that will change the face of Argentine football. He will only get better with time ... as he gains experience and strength.

Does anybody have a video of this guy? Have been searching all over the internet, but can´t find anything, beside the short clip on youtube. Some of you guys must have something with him? I found a 29 minutes long video on Aguero, that was a great video. Can someone create something like that on Gago? He is an awseome player this guy, from what I saw on him in the U20-world cup.
