a couple of the articles im reading are about hispanic players at our Sueno tryouts. I know that since it's being broadcast and setup by a Spanish television station, they are obviously going to focus on the spanish-speaking players. but it got me wondering, what happens if the person that "wins" doesnt speak spanish? will republica deportiva actually allow for the winner to be someone who doesnt connect with the mexican tv market?
^^I'm sure they will pick the best winner whether they are Caucasian or Hispanic. I don't know why you would assume they would pick a Hispanic person. They aren't racist or discriminating. Not every Hispanic person that watches Univision is Mexican. Hispanics are also Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Argentinians, Colombians, Chileans and many more.
Jade, the question was . . . how would Univision handle the show if a "non-Spanish speaker" (meaning an Anglo or maybe even a non-Spanish speaking Hispanic) won? It seems to me (I would hope, at least!) that Univision doesn't have any say on who wins, though, so if that person is not "hispano-hablante," I'm sure they would just have to deal with it (and use a translator).
The point of the show is to help MLS reach out to the hispanic community, so I am going to guess that pre-screening takes place, unless a player is head and shoulders better than the rest, most non-hispanic players are removed and players are narrowed down for the coaches to have final pick.
So, it is kind of like the way that Chivas Guadalajara makes personnel decisions? ...Or the exact opposite of how Dominic Kinnear makes persnnel decisions?
cool, so it's like an American Idol kind of show but for soccer? that can only be good publicity. hard to believe our FO got their act together to set it up.
The pub is going to be incredibly good if enough people watch it. I saw the interviews from the dads on the sidelines, and I think that this is a very smart way to build grassroots support and respect for MLS. If local people who love soccer view FCD as a potential vehicle to get their kids discovered, then maybe FCD stands a better chance of becoming "their" team. When Hispanic viewers see a ton of kids that look like them trying out, it becomes harder to view MLS as a strictly for gringo's league. The Hispanics are being assimilated into the mainstream. It is good to see FCD on the cutting edge of these changes. And, who knows, if we discover one Vince Papale, it will make for one heck of a story.
looked over the 60 names and saw some local kids. The Hebron kid was there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N3jXfSEJtg but here's an interesting name that popped up. If you google Robert Maplay, you'll see a couple features on him from DMN. 17 yr old freshman F at Hillcrest to a 24 year old D. sound like someone does check the birth certificates. he's made to the final 18 http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3599881
so can we just throw discoveries on all the ones we like? im cheering for the Funes bros. out of Arlington via Argentina. go Funes bros.
