Obviously the whole "Los Sures" thing was from all the Puerto Rican ppl in that part of BillyBurg...heh... I don't think anyone says that anymore though..hehe..
right..it's called "South Brooklyn" because that was the last really inhabiated part of what was then the "city" of Brooklyn, then around the turn of the century the rest of the flatlands of Brooklyn became urbanized too. It's quite misleading, but makes sense i guess.
Sometimes I wonder if the term is making a comeback, because of the Manhattanization of "South Brooklyn".
Our Lady of Mt Carmel? I rented a room in an apt in a building up the block from Laura Belmonte's (sp?). Van Arsdale HS was down the street from my old place. The feast was ok, very crowded, and the music was super loud. I was across from the Italian restaurant, dunno if it's still there.
Belmontes is still there - used to practice in the van arsedale school yard - yea its small black top but not bad for shagging flies! - The feast was better back in the 80s and early 90s when it was much bigger - now - eh - soso
according to Metrofanatic... and this is refering to me btw,.... "Oh, I bet he grew up in Hamburg and went every week to the Millerntor, right? Or is it more the "I had a mohawk and a Crass record in high school" kind of St. Pauli fan? Or better yet, "That was my favorite beer when a was a Deke at Geneseo"? pretty easy stereotyping fans of a club is it?
fo sure - bro - im talking like 93 - 94 - i grew up in queens but my family is from Greenpoint / Billy berg - there were a lot of italians back in teh day - back there were points where you would not dare go near kent avenue at certain hours. Happy to see it though - i dont fit in with the crowd but glad to see the neighborhood come to life!
A friend grew up on Berry and 9th, and he lives near there, so I stop by and visit. It's changed, especially the streets/neighborhood by the water. Priced everyone out of the area and forced 'em east on the L. It was dirt cheap in 2000-2002, not so much now.
After the Tartan Day Parade on Saturday, I happened upon this guy: Needless to say, he was very pleased to learn about St Pauli Supporters in NYC
