Let's be realistic, the fans know the club is bleeding money. The team was not playing for the coach, and the high-profile local players (Lam, Saiko) had issues with the coach. It's too bad that as a result Lam's relationship with the club let to the point where he was released
Corey Hertzog, who is on loan from MLS's Vancouver Whitecaps, scored 16 minutes into his FC Edmonton debut to lead the Eddies a 1-0 victory over the San Antonio Scorpions at Clarke Stadium in front of 1,745 spectators on Sunday.
Well 2014 news, but did not want to create a new thread, don't want to waste them. http://www.nasl.com/article/uuid/171pojhmp2d1y1pi7siwyalpq3/fc-edmonton-add-midfielders-banner-jones
Good luck to you guys. Hopefully since the stadium is complete there shouldn't be any hiccups like at the beginning of last season?
Rogers will be televising FCE matches on its City TV Edmonton affilate. Good news for FCE as fans will now get to watch home games on TV, and for FCE could bring in even more local sponsor $$$. Is there any word on whether Ottawa has come to any agreement with a local network. OSEG owned 67's have a good releationship with RogersTV Ottawa so I can see that becoming a reality unless Sportsnet360 steps in t do Ottawa NASL home matches.
I'm very interested in this game for a number of reasons. It's a milestone for Canadian club soccer as it represents the next stage in expanding the Canadian Championship. Still not a large tournament by any means, but the extra round is a great addition. It's also the first meeting of the two Canadian NASL clubs. Hopefully they can get a nice attendance-boosting rivalry going despite the geographic separation. It's also an interesting snapshot of some Canadian players. Both squads feature a lot of Canadian talent on the field. Ottawa has largely gone with older (by which I mean mid to late twenties) Canadian players - guys who will realistically peak their careers at the NASL level. Edmonton features a number of 18-20 year old Canadians - guys for whom the jury is still out on their ultimate career prospects. I'm not sure if this represents deliberately different philosophies for the two clubs or is just a fluke but it will be worth watching what happens over the next couple of seasons. Ottawa presumably knows what they have while Edmonton could win or lose the young player lottery. Finally, I'm interested in the game because the winner gets to face Montreal. Montreal is off to a poor start in MLS this season. Simply put, they are not a good MLS team at the moment. On top of that, Montreal will be under pressure to improve their MLS position which may mean using depth players instead of starters in the Canadian Championship. I know it is a long shot (it's been three years since a D2 team even tied an MLS team in the Canadian Championship and five years since a D2 team won a game) but if there was ever a year where a D2 team had a chance of advancing past an MLS opponent, this may be it.
2-1 win over Indy on the road. Did FCE return to Edmonton after the game or are they staying somwhere in Montreal or Ottawa area preparing for the Vcup match WED
Highlights from Edmonton's 6-1 triumph over Carolina : Not sure, but this may be the biggest blowout in NASL 2.0 history with the 5 goal difference.
Pretty good timing coming towards the end of the spring season and a new soccer turf with no more football lines
17-year-old Boakai’s call-up highlights Canada’s roster for Colombia friendly http://the11.ca/2014/10/03/17-year-...hlights-canadas-roster-for-colombia-friendly/ "Miller and his assistant coach, Jeff Paulus, understand how big the call-up is in terms of the NASL being scouted and recognized as a source for national-team talent. “We have definitely been talking about it. We have seen players called up by Honduras, by El Salvador. I think it shows the strength of our clubs in this league; we have so many teams battling for post-season positions.”
If not for FCE having a club in the NASL this teenage phenom would not have been able to play for a pro club in Canada. So far it looks as though only the Impact will be adding a USLPro club for 2015 giving Canada a 7th pro club in FC Montreal. Vancouver took a blow with the New Wesminster deal falling through but seem likely that other option's will get in place. Is there any word on what TFC is planning?
Eddies extend Laing, Ameobi; release Milton Blanco http://the11.ca/2014/10/14/eddies-extend-laing-ameobi-release-milton-blanco/
Watching this team in the Spring season was horrific. I don't know what the hell happened to them but I think they're currently the best team in nasl. If they make the playoffs, look out.
What looked early on in the Fall Season that SAS was going to run away with the Fall Title. Suddenly FCE is just 3 point behind after a SAS loss and FCE win. Overall table as well suddenly see FCE just 2 points behind FTL for the 4th spot. Two matches left and a win over the strikers put them into that final playoff spot. SAS meantime have MNU and NYC. I am sure that having a new soccer pitch has raised moral, Continued growth of better seating at Clarke, making the club feel a bit more like a pro club
Stability in Edmonton... FC Edmonton Coaching Staff Signs Three-Year Contract Extensions. http://www.nasl.com/article/uuid/c2...ng-staff-signs-three-year-contract-extensions
Stability and continued Cooperation and partnerships look to be growing fast. Continuing into Calgary with the ASA could see the Flames get involved while FCE on the same site as the ESKS transforming Clarke. Ahead could be FCE partnering with Rexell and an NASL team in Calgary added to the Flames stock of clubs and support and partnership with the Dino's and Mount Royal U. Adding to the Alberta Rivalry could only make this bigger and better.
With Canada looking to grow soccer at the pro levels. TSN with 3 new networks. OSEG taking a step with the Fury NASL. MLS clubs Supported by MLSE TFC, Vancouver with Bell, and Impact with Quebecor and TVA. The Academies have grown. While the MLS clubs are not focused on Canadian Nationals, the Academies and their adding of USL Pro clubs will be. As well have the PDL u-23 clubs. NASL is looking to work with Canada for more cities and the CFL clubs are rebuilding new stadium infrastructures for use of both Football and Soccer.
Edmonton still has their final home game of the season, but it looks like average attendance will be up about 1000 over last year which was already up about 1000 over the year before. If they can get up just a little bit higher they'll be in the range where the club becomes long term economically viable.
