How you can put Shaft over Superfly is beyond me. Shaft always seemed a little schtick-like, while Superfly is actually a very, very classic timeless album.

    My opinion, of course. :)

I like some of the covers that have been done for films:

Lick the Tins' version of "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" from the movie, Some Kind of Wonderful

Edie Brickell's "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," from Born on the Fourth of July

Then these artists did great full scores for the following films
    Cat Stevens: Harold and Maude
    Aimee Mann: Magnolia
    Simon and Garfunkel: The Graduate

I love The Who, so one of the coolest scenes set to music I've seen in a movie was in Fever Pitch when he's getting ready for the match and Baba O'Rielly kicks on.

"Sister Christian" (Night Ranger) in "Boogie Night's" and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (Iron Butterfly) in "Manhunter." I never get tired of seeing these two scenes.

There are better songs, but mixed together I love these. And really, can you beat these lyrics? :)

My opinion, too. Superfly was one of the finest examples of Curtis Mayfield's genius.

One of my favorite movie songs was Elliot Smith's "Miss Misery" from Good Will Hunting

Oh wait, no. What I meant to say is that it's an ass-bad movie.

I absolutely agree with you. Shaft is great, but for its campiness. Superfly is well, super fly.

    Also:

    - the whole Harold & Maude soundtrack by Cat Stevens
    - Fight Club, "Where Is My Mind?" by the Pixies
    - Good Will Hunting, "Miss Misery" by Elliot Smith

Right now, I'm digging "Lose Your Self" from 8 Mile.

Possibly the greatest opening to any movie ever made.
Cheech Marin buffing down his car with his hat to the tune of "LowRider" by WAR in "Nice Dreams" :p

They don't make 'em like that anymore.....

Aside from the obvious Philip Glass which nicodemus already covered the best use of a song in a movie is...
"Fight the Power" in Do the Right Thing

Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" in Trainspotting was pretty effective.

And Queen's "Flash Gordon"...I still have the album -- on Vinyl!

Yes, but these works are such seamless works of majesty you can't really break them up into songs. Although, "The Battle on the Ice" from Alexander Nevsky stands pretty well on its own.
