If you recall the style in which Garrincha used to dribble past defenders or even the way Brazils Denilson does today you will know what Im talking about. Yesterday during a Brazilian league game between Coritiba and Parana a forward for Coritiba had 2 men on him when he stopped the ball on the right wing and made quick false moves with his right leg toward the ball. Nothing extraordinary just some fast leg work as the ball sat waiting. Well the Ref stopped the game and called a technical foul. Unbelievable. They are trying to take the "art" out of soccer. 1 week earlier a Sport Recife player received the ball and before retuning it to a teammate he dribbled it in the air 3 times (no more than 3 seconds worth). Players for the other team said "We are all professionals and he must repect that, there is no room for childrens play on the field". Personally I totally disagree with the ref and the player above. The ref had no place in calling what was simply a Denilson move a foul and players practice juggling more than tactics itself, so whats wrong with a little juggle every blue moon. Get over it.
There is no such thing in the Laws as a 'technical foul'. Often times people think the ref is calling one thing, when he is calling another. Did you see this yourself, or are you getting the information from some news source (which itself may have misinterpreted, or changed the terminology in translation)?
As for the second one it's very common for a player to be pissed off by an opponent juggling the ball or doing some other fancy move when he's not being challenged or anything. It's basically just considered taunting an opponent. Now, if he's doing it to get past an opponent it's different. As for the first I would've asked the same questions as Preston. Robert
Preston, I saw it myself on TV. The guy was dancing around the ball while 2 defenders were waiting for a move..the ref came running and called it a foul. No one in MLS is capable of juggling the ball while two defenders watch him. The defenders would have hacked him as soon as his foot touched the ball the first time. (Though Gus St. Silva would not have called a foul for the hack ...)
That should not be interpreted as unsporting behavior. I find it ironic that in the most violent league in the world (Brazilian matches typically average 60+ fouls per match) that the one foul th eref chose to card is the one where the player is displaying skill, rather than killing a player who is skillful.

That ref is a moron. His excuse for calling that foul would be like a police officer arresting you for carrying a wad of cash through the 'hood because if he didn't arrest you, you might get mugged.
i agree with the ref. If there is anything that makes me mad is those players that go to corners to waste time. Give them yellow cards i say!
lond2345, you're not thinking at all. If the opponents want the ball, they can very well go into the corner and get the ball from the player who has it.
I used to do this all the time, juggle it..and when they would come around to get it, I would "hat" it, and dribble away. It was a strategy. You can get a defender to bite because they get really pissed. One time I did this three times in succession to a guy and had the ball up for about seven seconds. The buzzer sounded (we were indoor) and I let the ball drop. The defender was pissed and still trying to get the ball and punted it right into my face. Then he said he was sorry. We didn't fight.
yea, we played a crappy team this wednesday, and we were up 5-0, so we were messin around. I was at center mid, and I would come back, get the ball, and take on 2 or more people at a time....and beat them all, sometimes megging them to bring shame to their face. Towards the end of the game, they were already mad, I popped the ball up(from a pass) and heeled it over a guys head and then started juggling down the field. They basically tackled me, but I thought it was funny. I dont agree with these fouls..it takes the fun out of the game....
Well, if you're going to do something like that to an opponent who's already frustrated and embarrassed, maybe the ref should do something...better to call a foul on you now then call an ambulance later.
