Is it just me, or does there seem to be a LOT of promising films coming out this year? I'm looking forward to the following, some of which have recently opened, but I have yet to see:

Intolerable Cruely (only because it's Cohen Bros)
    Lost in Translation
    Kill Bill
    School of Rock
    Master and Commander
    Matrix Revolution
    Cold Mountain
    Elf
    Casa de los Babys
    Mystic River
    LOTR: Return
    Love Actually
    The Last Samurai
    The Alamo
    House of Sand and Fog

So far, this is the strongest Hollywood fall season in recent memory. I'm of the opinion that Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Kill Bill, and Mystic River are all extraordinary masterpieces.

Holy crap is this a bad movie (and I don't use the term "bad" lightly when it comes to movies). I love the Cohen Bros. but this movie was so underwhelming. There were a couple of obvious Cohen Bros. set pieces, but the majority of the movie played like it was written and directed by different people all together. I guess this is what you get when the Cohens work with a big studio and Brian Grazer.

The best thing about it was the new, longer preview for The Last Samurai. It is going to be epic.

    Re: Re: Fall Movie Season

I was afraid of this. When I saw the trailer, I had no idea it was a Cohen Bros. film, and I remember my wife and I mocking it--it just looked so awful. Only a couple weeks later did I realize that it was the Cs. Oh well, I'll probably go when it gets to the the $2.00 theater in a couple months.

Might be off to a drive-in double feature tonight of:
    The Rundown
    Kill Bill

This is the first year in a long, long time when there are not a lot of films coming out this fall that I am excited to see. I just don't see it as that great of a season, with more big-budget schlock than just solid filmmaking.

As I look through the Coming Soon website, here's what looks interesting to me:

Elephant - New Gus Van Sant that's been debated incessantly by critics since it won at Cannes earlier this year. Some people are angry that he doesn't try to answer "why?"; Van Sant's response has been that it's not his place to try to answer that.

21 Grams -- latest by the director of Y Tu Mama Tambien.

The Cooler -- This year's Punch-Drunk Love about a loser who becomes a winner after finding love.

Big Fish -- New Tim Burton. Trailer looks like the story is garbage, though.

Girl With A Pearl Earring -- Just a great concept, writing a story around a Vermeer painting. Good cast, too.

The Fog Of War -- New Errol Morris, about interviews he did with Robert MacNamara. Reviews have been exceptional for this so far.

I thought Dogville was out before the end of the year, but they've pushed its opening to '04. So far it's Lost In Translation against the field for best of the year.

Those all look good too, obie, (except the Tim Burton one, imo). But you're really not interested in ANY of the ones from above?

Btw, I just saw Kill Bill and was underwhelmed. Kind of like pomo joke that gets old after a while: diverting but not a classic at all.

Between the first week of November and New Year's, my wife & I usually go to the movies about twice a week. It's the only time of the year that we make a point of going.

Of the original list, we will probably go see Mystic River and House of Sand and Fog (the first-ever film about domestic property rights?). Everything else we'll wait for the reviews.

I think 21 Grams is by the director of Amores Perros, which, given that fact and the cast, I'm really up for.

Elephant may or may not be interesting. Same for House of Sand and Fog, which will either be an interesting entertainment or an overprecious confection. This is the first I've seen of The Fog of War, but it sounds fascinating.

I think this fall looks really good, especially after the sheer dearth of last year. What did I see last year at awards time. Adaptation was fairly good but not great. Same for Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Solaris was very good IMO. That's it, though.

But right now, I've seen two very, very good films in Lost in Translation and Mystic River..All the Real Girls early in the year was outstanding. It just looks like it will be a good year.
