Since Charles Renken and, generally speaking, birth year 92s are likely to make up the bulk of the 2009 U-17 team, here's that list above culled for that purpose: Arevalo, Estanilao D 5-8 145 1/14/92 Oxnard, Calif. Also interesting to note that Gyau would presumably have to leave Friedel's academy to go to Bradenton.
Good question. Here are the 1990s listed above: Bates, Mykell D 5-9 170 04/15/90 Roseville, Calif. And of that group, Nimo is the only player whose future whereabouts are at the moment unknown (understanding that the college-bound players might end up going pro if they have the chance) based on this thread: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=593095 So, not sure what to read into it but nice catch.
I'm pretty sure he finished HS this summer so I guess they didn't figure to use a residency spot on someone done with school.
After their stellar performances in Korea I'm surprised these two are allowed back at Bradenton. Clearly, the money used on these two would be better spent elsewhere. Well, can't say the next cycle isn't give Hispanics a fair shot. I thought JC was going to Friedel's academy? (I see Dave already raised this question.) And, I thought he was from the DC area? At the very least, it's an intriguing combination of soccer names. A six-foot 15-year old forward - be still my heart. Given his name, sounds like he might be Haitian American. I could handle another Jozy Altidore, thank you very much! Of course, given that he's 6-0, someone at the USSF will likely covert him to a CB. There's a Fridge joke going begging, here.
But with a different twist, if the stated heights are correct. With one exception, those guys allegedly are all 5' 9" to 5' 11". You can sometimes go through an entire U16 Hispanic team and not find a single guy that tall.
I expect a national player in a country of 300 million to dominate in ordinary club matches, every time. Those guys should be at flat-out better than everyday club players who are at the same age group. Every time. Yet of the handful of players on the '92 list whom my friends have seen, none of those players have managed that feat. I have not heard a single report about any of those players dominating in any single club match. Mostly, I hear stuff like, "Nice player, but he didn't get a lot done this game." OK, it's hardly an exhaustive list, a few players and maybe a dozen club matches in all. But still ... there aren't 20 guys in the country who kick serious tail against their age group, every time out? Maybe that's asking too much. Maybe I'm making out "national team player" to be more than it is.
watts dominates in NC. He played against the Liverpool u18 Academy team last year with the ODP 18 yr old team and was one of 2 players mentioned by the liverpool staff as being special. Heard he trained there late this summer as well and they were checking into his passport status.
Does anyone know how many of the '92s in the list were at the first U14 camp in MA? Or maybe the better question is who on the list was NOT at the camp in MA?
Realize my post may have come across wrong. I don't mean to imply that the selections were poor. Am in no position to second guess the selections, these might indeed be the very best players of their age group of the country as known by God. I am just struggling overall to understand what makes for a national player, and how I might recognize one if I come across such a player.
I won't question Donovan Henry, he comes from the same program that put out Altidore, and his DOC raves about him.
I'm wondering if someone like Dr. Schulz would be deserving of consideration for the U17 job. Here is a somewhat dated article about Donovan Henry and the Schulz Academy. http://www.schulzsocceracademy.com/home/141618.html
I think you can add Lemus, Cruz and Arreola as Hispanics as well. I'm pretty sure there is no one on West Coast with that name.
Players at 1st U14 camp in Mass in June 2005 were: Bramall, Gyau, & Miller from Region 1 Kitchen, Polak & Renken from Region II Craven, Herold & Jerome and Watts from Region III Arevalo, Edwards, Lemus, Orozco & Sylva from Region IV Not on list of note: Lester Dewee, Drew Hutchins, Joe Schmid, & Eden Spinks from Region I Soony Saad - Region II Emmet Kumeh, Bryan Leyva, Eric Reyes & Ross Tomaselli from Region III George Pantelic, Alberto Rosas from Region IV
What is the story on Gyau? I thought he was going to Brad's academy and there was a comment he here aboutsome issue with Bradenton
One game I like to play is find the kids born in the second half of the year who were not giant 12 year olds, who lack a famous father, and/or who are not the younger brother of a national team player. Only possible candidate in this pool of 23 is McInerny from Georgia. Don't know his story, he may or may not qualify. So that is 1 potential representative for almost 50% of the player pool, among 23 players. Typical, really.
Region I players of note not on residency roster - Robert Barrera (forward)from PDA and Travis Ives (goalkeeper)from Red Bull
that's a write up from more than a year ago it seems. what has happened to him since then? has his progress slowed - as happens to some youth players? why did he not make the u17 team? they certainly needed some class.
Because he presumably would have looked like Abdus Ibrahim, another highly regarded young player (a few months older than Henry), who was a deer in the headlights playing against top international '90s.
Ives? Ives has been off the radar for the last year, so I am guessing that Mrs. Ives wrote that post. Barerra, who has all of the talent in the world, unfortunately turns it on and off, sometimes not showing very well, but expect to hear from him in the future.
