Thanks. This is one of the guys we track, though not all that closely.

I've never heard him mentioned in connection with the U.S., and of course he's played for Germany (though I don't know if he's cap-tied).

I'm not sure, but I think he was moved to the first-team roster for the first time for this season.

Yeah I think he's been discussed here in two threads before.
Doesn't look like he will be playing for the US but you never know.

    He's not cap-tied yet.

Yes, he is part of the first team this season and played a bit in all games so far (2 I think)

This is where Klinnsmann could make a difference. Well, one of may areas.

But, there are a lot of "Amis," as the Germans call them, over there and if they're on the fence about who to play for, a call from Jurgen will carry a wee bit more clout than a call from Bob Bradley or Peter Nowak.

BTW, from the same www.topdrawersoccer.com article discussing Jesus Padilla, Sebastien Hines and Bruno Goncalves:

1860 Munich forward Fabian Johnson has declined an invitation to camp at this point but is keeping the door open to possibly playing with the U.S. someday.

PS - if he had long scraggly hair, he'd look like the Shoe Bomber, though so would most of us if we had long, scraggly hair.

That's pretty cool that they've even spoken to him about it, since I'm pretty sure Fabian is another player more or less "discovered" by BigSoccer. Thanks for the news.

So, will Berhalter help him make the decision? Of course, I'm not sure which way Gregg would encourage him to go.

Fabian has played 90 minutes against Italy in the U21 Euro semifinal and has reached the final :)

VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen have declared their interest in him. League champion Wolfsburg seem to be in pole position to sign him although it's not yet clear whether they will pay enough for 1860 to release him.

how would this work with the new rule? If Johnson turns 21, and he wants to switch to the US (even if unlikely), he could do so, correct? (as long as he doesn't play in a qualifier or official tournament with Germany)

It would be kindof cool if Johnson would grab his crotch and look towards Lienen (a double entendre of Michael Jackson and Clint Mathis salute at the same time!)

    Re: Fabian Johnson

The cool thing is that with this new FIFA rule the kid has time.

If, in a couple of years, he hasn't played for Germany's senior team (in non-friendlies), he can switch to the US.

But, as an 87, there are no more youth teams in the US for him to play for so why not get YNT games with Germany while you still can.

I have no idea who his compietition would be on the German's senior team, but I suspect there would be depth at each spot and it could just come down to who the coach is and whether they rate him or not.

But if they don't and he isn't cap-tied in a couple of years, it's not hard to imagine him following Jermaine Jones' lead and switching to the US.

He has played 68 minutes against England and is now U21 Champion. Germany won 4:0. Congrats :)

Scored his first goal for VFL Wolfsburg last Dec. 5, the equalizer in a 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg.

    It starts around @ 7:03

Lucky goal. Nice run, but he had no control of the ball. Just coincidence that he got to the ball earlier than the goalie.

Lascho's trying to turn us off on Fabian Johnson!:p :D

His touch was indeed heavy but finished it off nonetheless, better than being subbed off at the 31st minute in your first start for a new club.:D

Not a crazy idea considering he's getting starts at LEFT BACK for the current Bundesliga champions.

No, but he just won the U-21 European Championship with ze Germans. So I'd say hes pretty firmly entrenched in the German system.
