After our good showing vs. Fulham today, I'm starting to feel a bit optimistic about our chances to do well in the FA Cup this year.

First, Man United knocks off Man City in Round 3. And now we have Man United facing Liverpool in Round 4. So we'll end up with two fewer "big" clubs in the Round of 16.

I think we stand a much better chance of beating Liverpool than Man United should we face them in a later round, so I'll be rooting for Liverpool to pull off the upset tomorrow.

Let's go, Red Shiite! Beat ManUre! :D

    Liverpool 2-1 Man United

    Well done, Liverpool!

With Man United and Man City knocked out, I'm feeling a lot better about our chances to win the trophy. :)

Lazy! Here's the update as of 10:30am (Mountain Time)

    1 Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion
2 Everton v Blackpool or Sheffield Wednesday (tied 1-1, 2nd leg needed)
    3 Chelsea v Birmingham City
4 Crawley Town v Stoke City
    5 Stevenage v Tottenham Hotspur
6 Norwich City v Leicester City
    7 Sunderland or Middlesbrough (tied 1-1, 2nd leg needed) v Arsenal (3) v Aston Villa (2), 15 mins rem
8 Millwall or Southampton v Bolton Wanderers

So, the Blues will play either Blackpool (Championship) or Sheff Weds (League 1) - that SHOULD bode well for us, but of course, that's why they have to actually play the matches!

Teams that are on to the 5th Round so far:

    Premier League
    Tottenham
    Chelsea
    Arsenal
    Liverpool
    Stoke
    Norwich
    Everton
    Bolton

    Championship
    Hull
    Birmingham
    Brighton
    Leicester

    League One
    Stevenage

There are three 4th round replays:

Sheffield Wednesday vs. Blackpool (League One team vs. Championship team)
Southampton vs. Millwall (both in the Championship)
Middlesbrough vs Sunderland (Championship vs. Premier League)

Note: If Middlesbrough beat Sunderland in their replay, then half the teams in the 5th round will be either from the Championship or League One

Interesting to see that balance - Everton will be playing either Sheff Weds or Blackpool - can League 1 come through against the Championship?

The draw for the 5th round was certainly unusual in that every lower league team will play a Premier League opponent.

It would have been great for us had, say, Arsenal drawn Tottenham, and Chelsea drawn Liverpool.

But as they say, beggars shouldn't be choosers.

    Saturday, Feb 18th results:

    Sunderland 2-0 Arsenal :D
    Everton 2-0 Blackpool :)
    Norwich City 1-2 Leicester City
    Millwall 0-2 Bolton
    Chelsea 1-1 Birmingham City :p

It's a pity Birmingham couldn't hold onto their lead and beat Chelsea, but hopefully they'll have better luck in their replay at home.

Not a bad day at all, however, from an Everton point of view.

Upcoming matches on Sunday, Feb. 19th:

    Crawley Town vs. Stoke City
    Stevenage vs. Tottenham
    Liverpool vs. Brighton

Brighton are 9th in the Championship table and might be able to earn a draw at Anfield. And Crawley Town could give Stoke some trouble.

But I think it's very unlikely that League One Stevenage will beat Tottenham.

Sunderland at home... I'd say its about the best we could have hoped for, now COYB and demolish these! take us to Wembley, demolish the semi opponent and then win us a cup!

Is there a draw after the next round or are you already drawn against the winner of one of the other matches?

There will be a draw following the upcoming quarterfinals. And unless there's a major upset we'll face either Liverpool, Chelsea, or Tottenham if we make the semi-finals

Of those 3 teams, I think we match up best against Liverpool.

I'll be interested to see how we play out wide in the cup matches - with Donovan now gone and Pienaar cup-tied, it's up to others to maintain some of the fluidity and speed that we have seen over the last few months...

I think Drenthe and Coleman are both solid wide players for us.

In my eyes Drenthe is considerably more dangerous on the right side than on the left.

But if Drenthe is on the right, that puts Coleman on the left, and I can't recall Coleman ever playing on the left for any minutes to speak of.

Of course, Gueye would be someone we could play on the left instead of Coleman, but to be honest, Gueye hasn't impessed me that much so far.

Gueye seems to have a lot of potential, but, to me, he plays too passively since he rarely attempts taking on a defender in a 1 v 1 situation, even though he looks to have the skills to be successful if he tried it.

I am hot/cold on Drenthe - to me, it is a question of "which Drenthe" shows up for the match? Is it "aggressive with a good touch" or "touch the ball and give it away"? He has some much upside I really want to see him get it together and earn a consistent spot in the starting XI.

Pepe Reina received a red card today for headbutting a Newcastle United player, James Perch.

Apparently Perch instigated the incident and made the headbutt appear worse than it actually was, but there's no excuse for Reina's retaliation.

Reina's ejection from the match means he'll miss their FA Cup semi-final vs. the Toffees. :)
