huh? this sounds like an old rationalization. france, the netherlands and sweden seem as big as the u.s. now japan vs the netherlands. that was like watching a team of 13 year olds and a team of 16 year olds - and the 16 year olds, most seem to agree, were given the run around despite winning.
I agree. Until After World War II Americans were probably the tallest people in the world, but that's no longer true. American woman average around 5 feet 4 inches in height. Swedish women are 5 feet 5 inches; Dutch women are 5 feet 6 inches tall on average -- just to mention two of our World Cup opponents. . A lot of European countries have women as tall or taller than the U.S. My limited and unscientific observation is that the Dutch are the tallest people in the world. I'm 6 feet 1 inch, and that doesn't seem very tall in the Netherlands. Japanese women average 5 feet 2 inches in height. It may be that the U.S. WNT is still the biggest team in the world because we tend to favor bigger and stronger players and play a more physical game -- although that may not be true anymore either.
The statistics seems to agree, at last have all reports I seem over the tallest people had Netherlands on top followed by the Scandinavian countries in some order.
i was talking just about what the teams looked like on the field. they certainly didn't look like the top euro teams were 13 year olds playing against american 16 year olds. i'd like to see a height/size comparison of the u.s. & french, dutch, & swedish heavily utilized players.
I just can't understand why did many ppl say USWNT is only good at physical level. They have very good technique and pass combination.
Sorry I'm not a native English speaker and from what you say I probably didn't use the correct word. To me the gap was a matter of athleticism, of power/muscle. I didn't mean height. In French we talk for that about "jeu physique" which I believed could be translated in English as "physical play".
