Hello everyone, This is Andrew Battisti and I am the co-host of the longest running soccer radio show in North America, Soccer is a Kick in the Grass, based in Rochester, NY. To everyone who remembers the NASL and our team, the Lancers, and to those who want to know more about how big-time pro soccer started in the US, we are doing an extended interview with the former owner of the Lancers, Charlie Schiano, who will share his memories and many stories about the Lancers and the NASL. The first installment of the chat is now available on our website, www.soccerisakickinthegrass.com. Charlie talks about the origin of the Lancers, the first few years the team spent in the American Soccer League and the circumstances surrounding the team's move to the NASL before the 1970 season, a move that saved the NASL from extinction. Future installments will trace the history of the NASL, including the glory years from 1977-1980, with many behind the scenes facts that only Charlie knows! We invite everyone to visit our website and check it out!
Point of information for you: The American Soccer League that the Lancers played in collapsed in 1983, after 50 seasons (wow!). The United Soccer Leagues absorbed what was left of the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) in 1997, which was a merger between the Western Soccer Alliance (later Western Soccer League), and ASL III, the latter formed in 1988. Great interview so far, btw. Haven't listened to all of it yet, but it's really interesting .
